Wildlife Programs Specialist

 

Description:

The Wildlife Programs Specialist designs and delivers engaging, inspiring, high-quality educational programs for the Lindsay Wildlife Experience (LWE). The emphasis of this role is LWE exhibit hall programs, off-site outreach programs/events, and onsite workshops. The Wildlife Programs Specialist works within the Education Department and, in collaboration with other LWE teams, to develop new programs and modify the existing ones in accordance with the mission of LWE and its strategic plan. This is a full-time 40 hours per week hourly position with benefits.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the exhibit hall is well maintained on a daily basis for programs to occur.
  • Develop and deliver exhibit hall educational programs in a way that is engaging, informative, safe, and of the highest quality—serving as the lead staff member for these programs.
  • Attend off-site outreach programs and events, especially ones requesting live animals, as needed.
  • Assists the Curator of Education in exhibition curation, research, fabrication, and exhibit design.
  • Develops and executes educational workshops, classes, and hikes.
  • Provide exemplary customer service to program participants, museum staff, and volunteers.

    Qualifications

    • Strong knowledge of K-12 learning and teaching strategies, curriculum, and standards and museum education theory and practice.
    • Undergraduate degree in animal science, biology, conservation biology, ecology, environmental education, or related field.
    • Excellent public speaking and wildlife program skills for audiences that vary in size, age, and knowledge.
    • Previous education experience, especially with children and in the fields of wildlife biology, environmental science, or related subjects.
    • Experience in the handling, care, and training of a wide variety of animals including, but not limited to, small mammals, amphibians, reptiles and raptors.
    • Willingness to represent the LWE at off-site outreach programs and similar special events.
    • Creative thinking and research skills to develop inspirational programs that connect people to wildlife.
    • Ability to display good judgment, problem solve, and exercise tact and diplomacy at all times; courteous and respectful interactions with supervisors, co-workers and guests.
    • Organized and capable of timely completion of projects with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Flexibility with regards to schedule.
    • Computer skills: MS Office Suite of programs and Google for Work Apps.
    • Must have a valid California driver’s license.
    • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and stand up for 8 hours.
