We are one of the largest academic departments on campus, and we support some 80 graduate students, 65 faculty members, 40 postdoctoral scholars, 80 classified and professional staff, and 100 hourly and student hourly employees.
The Department of Biology and its Instructional Services team has an exciting opportunity for a highly qualified Web Graphics Specialist who will be responsible for keeping the entire Biology teaching enterprise running smoothly.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Accessible Media and Instructional Support 30%
- Use independent judgment and decision making skills to assess accessibility needs across Biology curriculum. Prioritize and triage current course catalog to identify courses which are high priority for instructional.
- Work with Instructors and Instructional TAs to create accessible documents for courses. Revise course materials to support universal design for Biology courses.
- Develop quarterly trainings to familiarize instructors, TAs, and course coordinators with accessible course content and content creation.
- Promote instructional tools to improve accessible course materials and technology (such as free UW Captioning services, Canvas accessibility, develop accessible lab materials and protocols, among others).
- Participate in disability services programming as requested.
- Maintain data regarding accessibility services on campus. Help refer instructors and department staff to appropriate services to create accessible curriculum and support students.
Lab Manuals and Undergraduate Program Materials 25%
- Use knowledge of Biology curriculum and department structure to update lab manuals for Biology courses on a quarterly basis. Includes proofreading, creating or enhancing graphics, formatting, and printing.
- Work with faculty to develop effective Canvas course content. Create Canvas templates to be used by Biology instructors across our curriculum. Each quarter, help faculty with Canvas troubleshooting and course design.
- In collaboration with instructors, develop accessible and informative web content for courses.
Student News, Social Media, and Department Website 25%
- Develop digital content that showcases our undergraduate and graduate student accomplishments. Distribute and promote content across social media platforms (Instagram, X, Facebook, etc).
- Assist with updates to Biology undergraduate program web pages. Create or optimize images/graphics for online use in coordination with department IT staff.
- Develop web content that follows best practices guidelines for accessibility.
- Use knowledge of student records and FERPA regulations to develop appropriate department communication materials.
Graduation Reception and Recognition Support (last 5 weeks of spring quarter) 10%
- Coordinate planning of the graduation reception to ensure a successful event for over 600 graduates and their families. Create timelines and planners for committee participants.
- Create and arrange development of department graduation program.
- Create and print recognition certificates for graduation ceremony and procure appropriate signatures.
- Respond to student and parent inquiries about graduation celebration.
- Create department graduation graphics materials as needed (invitations, certificates, etc).
- Coordinate graduation photography services.
As Instructional Support 10%
- Work collaboratively with instructional services staff to provide support to Biology department. Assist as needed with exam printing, general questions from Biology instructors, staff, and students, and office organization.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's Degree and two years of experience with marketing, graphic design, and web design, experience with Microsoft Office Programs, and Experience with Google Suite.
- Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
