Description:
The Wayfinding Designer will be responsible for assisting the Manager of Graphics and Wayfinding in the design and production of the MBTA Universal Wayfinding Program. The focus of this program is on the development and integration of a user-friendly and ADA-compliant navigation system throughout the MBTA, supporting the broader mission of the Customer Experience and System-Wide Accessibility Departments to create safe, dependable, and inclusive public transportation. Under the direction of the Manager of Graphics & Wayfinding, the Wayfinding Designer will carry out environmental graphic design standards, permanent and temporary station signage, and related tasks in compliance with the requirements of the Boston Center for Independent Living Lawsuit Settlement.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for oversight and coordination of specific station wayfinding projects that includes maintaining quality control of standards.
- Support Manager of Graphics and Wayfinding and instruct Associate Wayfinding Designers on the technical production of working files, signage artwork, signage layouts, and schedules.
- Work with the Manager of Graphics and Wayfinding and consultants on station wayfinding plans and drawings to create signage contract drawings.
- Review and provide Wayfinding-related comments for design contract drawings at each submittal stage.
- Review RFIs, construction documents, shop drawings, and sign samples to help ensure signage is correctly executed and implemented, and that MBTA Graphic Standards are maintained.
- Assist with researching, writing, and coordinating signage specifications, utilizing disciplines of environmental graphic design and architecture.
- Support and update the Manager of Graphics and Wayfinding on the status of projects and meeting deadlines.
- Assist in maintaining and updating MBTA wayfinding systems.
- Assist the Manager of Graphics and Wayfinding with ongoing projects in the design and construction phases.
- Attend site visits for all relevant design and construction phases to final documentation of signage installation. Photo-documentation of MBTA stations as per construction project.
- Maintain organized, accurate, and updated graphic and architectural files to ensure consistent archival document referencing and final production.
- Collaborate with other MBTA departments and stakeholders to improve the customer experience by leveraging and applying collective expertise.
- Stay current with architectural, environmental, and graphic design technology and trends.
- Perform related duties and projects as assigned.
- Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
