Veterinary Technician

 

Description:

  • Monitor and recover anesthetized NHPs and rabbits for procedures, including PET/CT scans
  • Process bloods and tissues according to specific needs of multiple experiments
  • Maintain accurate records and documentations associated with technical procedures
  • Manipulate infectious and radioactive NHPs and rabbits in a safe and proficient manner
  • Clearly communicate any changes in animals’ health status to facility veterinarian and appropriate team members
  • Run/Use autoclave, centrifuge, homogenizer, pipettors of various types
  • Run/use CBC machine, Chemistry machine, i-STAT, glucometer and other equipment and provide results to appropriate personnel
  • Provide feedback on methods and technical procedures to improve upon, where applicable
  • Learn microbiology assays including plating for bacterial numbers in a BSL-3 environment (requires training and gaining access to the BSL-3)
  • Assist with rhesus necropsies as prosector
  • Analyze the results of on-study blood work for abnormalities and keep records of this analysis, alert facility Vet as well as supervisors if abnormalities are found.
  • Marmoset bloodwork (analysis and management of data)
  • Reading, interpreting & entering/storing bloodwork at baseline, peaks/troughs and pre- necropsy
  • Reporting any abnormalities and making any necessary treatment plans to help correct any abnormalities or clinical representation of animals
  • Reading, interpreting & entering/storing bloodwork for tolerability studies done outside of our labs
  • Serve as the main point of contact, in charge of marmoset necropsy weeks – including in preparation of documents for data collection, assisting in necropsy of animals, processing and plating samples taken, collating data from the generated records.
  • Provide refinement of marmoset anesthesia including performing several small experiments to examine glycopyrrolate/ketamine usage as a pre-medication for PET/CT scans and observing/collecting and presenting data on how these drugs effect our studies/marmosets on study.

  • Willingness and ability to work flexible hours when experimental needs require it.
