Service Description : The Utah Higher Education AmeriCorps Network (UHEAN) connects Utah college and university students with community and government agencies, healthcare providers, K-12 schools, and college/university departments to provide service that both benefits the community and supports the member's course of study. UHEAN partners with eight public colleges and universities throughout Utah (SLCC, SUU, STech, U of U, USU, UTU, UVU, and WSU), and its members are primarily drawn from the currently-enrolled student body at those institutions. They serve part-time, often in programs directly tied to their future degree and career, while continuing to pursue their education. UHEAN focuses on three issue areas: Education (tutoring or student-teaching in K-12 schools, or providing school-completion and college access mentoring for K-16 students), Healthy Futures (providing primary healthcare or social work services to underserved or uninsured patients), and Capacity Building (expanding a community organization's ability to serve its clients). UHEAN is an Education Award Only Program; it does not offer additional stipends or living allowances.

Member Duties : Members may serve in a K-12 classroom by either tutoring or student teaching. They will either work in high-needs subject areas (STEM, ESL, Special Education) or work with underserved populations (Title I schools, schools with greater than 50% of students receiving free- or reduced-priced lunches). They will develop lesson plans, provide group- and individual instruction to students, provide homework help, and correct assignments. Members may also serve in school completion or college access programs for K-16 students. The member will serve as a mentor to an individual or group of low-income, first generation, or foster care students to support their attainment of a high school diploma or college degree. These members' duties will include: arranging college access workshops in topics such as application writing, completing FAFSA, applying for scholarships and work study jobs, and transitioning from high school to college.
