Tube Laser Operator

 

Description:

 

To construct, test, and repair prototype gas or solid-state laser devices, according to engineering layouts and specifications, following instructions for electronic circuits. Analyzes test data and reports results to project engineers.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews plans with engineering team to clarify specifications for laser devices.
  • Interprets instructions for production workers who grind the mirror blanks and machine metal parts and install and align them.
  • Operates vacuum pumps to empty laser body, refills it with the specified number of gases, such as helium, carbon dioxide, or neon, checks pressure, and performs required tests.
  • Assembles laser device in chassis and connects regulatory dials and switches.
  • Sets up electronic and optical instruments to test laser devices at various electrical or optical inputs.
  • Also tests for gas leaks.
  • Analyzes and reports test findings to engineering team.
  • When results indicate problems, the technician will suggest ideas for consideration by project engineers.

Desired Skills and Experience

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED certificate required.
  • Completion of a technical school course as a laser technician. This usually requires two-year training course.
  • One to two years of experience working in the actual construction of laser devices. Part of this may be part of a work-study program as long as actual working conditions are used in the training program.
  • Ability to accurately read engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Computer and writing skills sufficient to prepare test reports and recommendations to engineering team.

 

Lou-Rich Training Requirements:

  • Applicable training will be completed by following the syllabi (Human Resources, Safety, IFS - Timeclock, IFS - Navigation, ISO) for each new hire and that will be verified by the Employee Orientation & Job Qualification form within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Applicable training will be completed by following the Assembly or Press Room Training Matrix (F4400-35 or -041). The effectiveness of assembly training guidelines will be determined by employee knowledge and demonstration of learned concepts. Additional training after the first several weeks of on-the-job training will be determined by the Supervisor in preparation to operate on their own as needed. Any follow-up training will be evaluated and provided at the 60-day review or as deemed necessary for the position.
