Supervisory Biologist

 

Description:

The Supervisory Biologist serves as a Curator of Amazonia and American Trail with responsibility for the conception, goal setting, planning, leadership, and implementation of animal care on a daily basis including animal well-being, animal security, animal diets, behavioral husbandry (training), reproductive programs, conservation programs, exhibition, indoor botanical collections, and interpretive programs including associated public education utilizing the zoo’s collection.

In this position you will:

  • Supervise staff biologist(s) and animal caretakers, volunteers, interns, and contractors. Plan and carry out the full range of supervisory and managerial authorities related to the assignment and scheduling of work, leave approval/disapproval, coordination with other programs, technical work direction, establishment of priorities and deadlines, creation of performance standards, and evaluation of subordinates’ performance.
  • Manage all aspects of the daily care and husbandry of the pinnipeds, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and the invertebrate animal collection, which includes exotic species.
  • Develop written monitoring and maintenance protocols. Advise Curators, Keepers and Veterinarians on the management, husbandry, and medical care of animals to ensure compatibility with life support system capabilities.
  • Development and oversight of techniques and procedures for appropriate abiotic and biotic requirements for housing and social groupings, feeding, sanitation and pest control, capture and physical restraint, crating, shipping, moving, introducing and separating animals, and oversight for USDA and other regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and maintain contacts and collaborative relationships with outside organizations, including media, universities and colleges, and local public and private schools that express an interest in zoo-based programs.
