Description:

The Chicago Retail Packaging & Display Structural Designer is responsible for the development of cost-effective, structurally sound point-of-purchase displays and packaging as well as redesign of items for improved packaging performance. Provides packaging design and technical support to the Sales, Project Management, Graphic Design, Production, and Contract Packaging departments as well as to International Paper clients. This is an individual contributor role in Aurora, IL.

The Job You Will Perform:

  • Create designs for corrugated packaging and point-of-purchase displays, using a basic understanding of alternative display materials such as metal, plastic, wood, etc.
  • Work with sales to determine client’s display/packaging needs and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Assure that the packaging or display is designed efficiently and compares favorably to competitor’s designs.
  • Construct and inspect display/packaging samples to ensure the end result is the best possible solution for its intended purpose.
  • Review and monitor display/package design and assist with resolving manufacturing problems or improved display/box performance.
  • Review and understand the ship testing equipment.
  • Ensure all designs fall within testing standards.
  • Prepare construction cards and provide adequate drawings and specifications for the proper manufacturer of components.
  • Understand site equipment and the packaging equipment used by our customers and vendors.
  • Work with vendors to assure tooling components are correct and materials are available to support customer orders.
  • Responsible for checking incoming quality conformance of cutting dies.
  • Make formal or informal client presentations with Sales or individually regarding packaging or display concepts.
  • Communicate with other packaging designers within International Paper’s Retail Experience Network as well as areas of the business to learn of new designs or techniques.

The Skills You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Design or Engineering or related field preferred; strong portfolio required.
  • Point-of-purchase experience strongly desired.
  • Must be able to field the entire design process from concept, prototype, testing, and production.
  • Knowledge of Artios/CAD applications and strong PC/computer skills. 3D modeling experience a plus.
  • Knowledge of standard cost systems to optimize profitability on display/packaging designs, knowledge of the production process, machine limitations, and production standards to ensure compatibility to design to production capabilities.
  • Understanding of the testing processes for corrugated materials.
  • Basic knowledge of automated packaging equipment.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including the ability to identify priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to remain flexible and accept or adapt to change in the creative environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions while working independently or collaboratively.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be enthusiastic, team-oriented, organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle pressure/stress and work extra or irregular hours as needed to meet client needs.
