Description:
The primary purpose of this position is to build an underwriting and/or underwriting support staff capable of effectively carrying out assignments and specific goals and well as to recommend effective personnel actions when needed.
What You'll Be Doing
- Work with Markel executives and Specialty leaders to align the Specialty Data Program to Markel’s business goals
- Facilitate the development of, own, and advance a Markel Specialty Data & Analytics strategy and vision
- Work with business leaders and IT to implement Specialty’s data & analytics vision, aligning it to technology solutions and strategic roadmaps
- In collaboration with key leaders, delineate between local vs central management information needs, ranging from operational reporting to advanced analytics, shepherding the development of an optimal operating model
- Manage a team of data & analytics professionals, including data engineers and data scientists, advancing a “test and learn” environment, pushing boundaries in how to incorporate advanced analytics into our underwriting and claims processes
- Serve as product manager; Manage, mentor, and coach a team of Product Owners and BAs to ensure connection of macro level strategies and business needs to micro technical solutions
- Take ownership of the Specialty Data Program and establish delivery accountability; Leverage Specialty Data Program to develop KPIs and metrics to be used across Markel Specialty
- Conduct gap analysis between existing systems and target state architecture; develop plan to address data limitations and improve availability and usage through a prioritization framework
- Collaborate with Specialty Change Management & Communications and Specialty Business Units to manage change towards using a consolidated data platform for reporting and analytics
What We're Looking For
- 15+ years of experience in data solutions & management, data strategy, and/or data & analytics
- Similar years of experience in the insurance industry with a focus on commercial lines
- Undergraduate degree preferred; Graduate degree and/or industry designations a plus
- Excellent leadership and team management skills; track record of developing talent
- Superior verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate and partner with stakeholders across the insurance value chain and gain “buy in”
- Strong influence management skills
