Core Responsibilities
Strategic Thinking: Develops a clear picture of the Development portfolio including accurate and up-to-date status of all programs, resourcing needs and potential impact to long term revenue; Creates a robust approach to establishing a strategically aligned portfolio that balances risk and value; Provides insights into market and competitive dynamics, return on investment, and execution, scientific, and regulatory risk associated with clinical development programs; Identifies opportunities to strengthen the Development portfolio and presents strategic options and analysis to guide decision making around entry and exit of programs in the portfolio
Influence and Partnership: Leads portfolio review process to support Research, Development and Commercial leadership to make informed investment decisions for both internal and external pipeline opportunities; Liaises with multiple functions to inform and influence strategy and communication, including finance, commercial, investor relations, business development and others; Establishes and Cultivates a world-class Program Strategy Leader function to drive excellence in enterprise-level leadership within the program strategy team system; Leads select strategic initiatives within Development and in collaboration with other functions
Delivery Excellence: Establishes and maintains a systematic approach to portfolio management including managing cross-portfolio development efforts, go/no-go stage gate decisions, and prioritization of programs within and across therapeutic areas; Defines program value and risk, leveraging a standard method for defining program ROI at any development stage and accounting for viability and risk; Develops and leverages a common representation of data including standard metrics by which to track and measure program performance and progress, common tools and templates for tracing pipeline and program metrics, and creates accurate and up-to-date program data; Creates a robust, standardized project management capability
Additional Responsibilities
Leadership: Will have direct leadership accountability for of the following functions: Program Strategy Leadership, Program Management and Portfolio Strategy & Analytics.
Innovation: Stays current on cutting-edge technologies and drug development innovations by actively participating in industry meetings and maintaining relationships with external innovators to bring the best solutions to Gilead
People Development: Attracts industry leading talent and grows leaders; Develops others by identifying and mentoring high performers and building a culture of inclusion and collaboration throughout the organization; Delegates responsibility and empowers others.
Decision-making: Drives portfolio review processes to ensure consistent, high quality decision dialogue with Development leadership through prioritization frameworks and robust data; Establishes analytical framework for assessment of the Development portfolio; Develops budget and resource requests for portfolio review, creates project P&Ls and manages against timelines and budget; Communicates on-going performance data to Development leadership to inform budget and resource reallocation
Communication: Advocates on behalf of Gilead and effectively communicates complex medical/clinical concepts in both written and oral communication to both internal and external stakeholders
Capabilities And Requirements
You have robust drug development experience and understand what it takes to shepherd a molecule through the clinic to launch
You can create and fulfil a vision in a matrix environment and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders across different functions.
You have excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to translate between business leaders, scientists and technologists
You have the credibility and reputation to attract and retain top talent with a history of creating teams that can thrive in a fast-paced, matrixed environment
You have leadership, collaboration, relationship building, and interpersonal skills
You have experience solving problems, making data-driven decisions, and conducting root cause analysis
You have experience with financial analysis and reporting and presenting complex information
