Description:

Krannert Art Museum is accepting applications for a Security Guard. Under direct supervision from the Security Supervisor, this position is responsible for the safety of Krannert Art Museum's collection, ongoing programs, facility, personnel, and its visitors. As the frontline to our customer-base (both internal and external) the security guard is responsible for exemplifying the professional and high-standards of the Museum. Customer care and safety is critical to this position and should be personified at all times, as is commitment to the institution's diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility goals.

Duties & Responsibilities:

While staying alert and being courteous to visitors, patrol the entire area of the assigned post. This may entail:
Walking throughout the galleries actively monitoring activities.
Remaining stationary for extended periods of time monitoring gallery activities.
Observing artwork for discrepancies, reporting issues to appropriate staff member.
Monitoring entrances, exits, stairwells, ensuring security and safety of operations.
Escorting guests through the museum.
In the absence of or at the direction of the Security Supervisor, this position may be upgraded to Lead Guard; duties of which may include (but are not limited to) the following:
Ensure gallery assignments are being upheld by staff and student guards.
Ensure break and lunch times are adhered to.
Ensure museum is appropriately staffed and works with Security Supervisor to address operational needs.
Ensure replacement staff is contacted for guard staff shortages and assists in coordinating call-in procedures.
Perform internal and external building checks for vandalism, damage, suspicious activity, and potentially hazardous conditions or materials. Following the appropriate reporting procedures in any such instances.
Responsible for reporting in detail damaged or missing objects, mechanical or facility issues, burned out lights, leaks or other problems to the Security Supervisor as soon as they are detected.
Monitor and record temperature & humidity readings in all museum spaces to ensure readings are within the museum standard range.
Enforce gallery rules as outlined in the guard manual.
Guard property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
Adhere to and respectfully enforce preservation standards for displays by protecting artwork. Prevent artwork from being photographed where required. Direct visitors to coat and locker rooms to store materials that do not fit within the museum “allowable items” category (see guard manual).
Check credentials and have all F&S, maintenance, and contracted workers sign in at the information desk. Assigns visitor badges before work commences and escort to
appropriate areas.
Act as a liaison for the museum staff by directing/escorting visitors to applicable areas for appointments.
Maintain a familiarity with the building and its resources, know the building emergency action plan (BEAP) and be able to guide/direct staff and visitors in case of emergencies.
Remind visitors of violations of University and museum regulations when appropriate.
Maintain a working knowledge of current applicable departmental and University policies, procedures, and requirements i.e.: Guard Manual, Civil Service Policy & Rules, Smoke Free Campus, and Conceal Carry.
Prepare all applicable forms, documentation and reports as required.
When necessary, stanchion assembly is required. Stanchion racks may be in excess of 25 lbs.
Act as a mentor student guards by providing appropriate guidance, direction, and feedback, reports performance issues to lead or supervisor.
Other related duties as assigned.


Additional Physical Demands

1. Physical Demands: Position includes extensive walking/standing; remaining in a stationary position for long periods; stooping; reaching; bending; unlocking doors with locks that are either upwards of 5’8” feet from the floor or as low as near the floor; and opening/closing doors weighing upwards of 25 lbs.

2. Working Environment/Conditions:The security staff is asked to maintain a high level of professionalism, maturity, and discretion in addition to maintaining the safety of our operation. There may be periods of extremely high to extremely low traffic and the incumbent must be able to weather the fluctuation. The incumbent is expected to be ever vigilant and to respond quickly to potentially stressful or life- threatening situations.

3. Personal Relationships: Direct contact with with the Krannert Museum staff as well as other university departments, external vendors, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid/ current Illinois Drivers license.
No record of conviction of a felony, or of a crime involving moral turpitude.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to read basic operational procedures and prepare reports.
Use sound judgment when addressing the needs of the customer and maintains a courteous and safe environment.
Reliable, predictable attendance is essential to the position.
