Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking a dedicated and security minded individual to join our team as a Safety and Security Coordinator.

This position is open to internal and external candidates for one week.

The mission of the Security Services Department is to ensure that the museum and campus is a safe environment for all staff, volunteers, and visitors and that the buildings, property, and art are secured against threats at all times. This aim is accomplished through regular patrols of the museum and campus, enforcing rules and regulations, surveilling and monitoring through use of cameras and other technology, assisting visitors and employees, reporting and responding to potential hazards and suspicious activities, and responding in emergency situations. The work performed in this role will also support the cultural enrichment goals of the Commonwealth of Virginia and support the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts strategic plan.

The Safety and Security Coordinator will contribute to this objective by providing comprehensive training to designated security personnel. This training will encompass firearms proficiency, CPR, AED operation, first aid procedures, and security officer and alarm response protocols. Additionally, the coordinator will assume the responsibilities of quartermaster and armorer, ensuring the proper inventory and maintenance of security equipment. They will also be expected to fulfill any other duties deemed necessary by the Assistant Director of Security Services and/or Director of Security Services.

Responsibilities

  • This position reports to the Assistant Director of Security Services.
  • Works independently and in close collaboration with the Assistant Director of Security Services and Security Leadership Team.
  • Train Special Conservator of the Peace (SCOP) Officers on firearms proficiency, use of force, defensive tactics and officer safety.
  • Instruct security personnel on security officer and alarm response protocols and museum staff on CPR, AED operation and first aid procedures.
  • Maintain inventory and ensure proper functioning of security equipment to include firearms.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on security equipment to include firearms.
  • Maintain security budget for law enforcement equipment, uniforms and supplies.
  • Represent the VMFA as the Subject Matter Expert in firearms along with safety operations and procedures.
  • May occasionally require off-hour response to address critical or emergent situations.
  • Fulfill other duties assigned by the Assistant Director of Security Services and/or Director of Security Services
