Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
As the Research Associate, you will provide critical research support for exhibition, installation didactics, in-gallery video, and digital content for the re-envisioned Africa galleries. You will work directly with the curatorial team and colleagues in the Audience Engagement Departments to develop this new content. This position was conceived to help provide professional development for an African art specialist seeking a curatorial career.
This is a position with an established end-date or time frame.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Research works of art in the collection that will be featured/update collections database
- Work with Africa curator on research of content concerning Africa historical narratives and interface of Africa and other Met curatorial departments
- Assist with periodical, image, and documentary film research for installation
- Assist with contextual image management for installation
- Provide support with drafting gallery texts for objects, case labels, and sub-section commentaries
- Provide support with updating research presentations and materials for permanent installation expert collaborators
- Coordinate interdisciplinary conversations to be recorded as gallery digital prompts with Digital and expert collaborators
- Assist with planning outreach to African communities
- Assist with developing joint content with World Monuments Fund on regional conservation projects
- Assemble history timelines and maps for Africa projects
- Act as liaison with Education department.
- Other related duties as needed
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree in African Art History, African History, Anthropology, Archaeology, or Africana studies required
- Related curatorial experience required
- Strong research skills with proven follow-through
- Excellent organizational and planning skills; strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to exercise initiative.
- Knowledge of art history required
- Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required
- Good working knowledge of French language preferred
