Description:
The fixed-term Public Programs Coordinator, Rituals of Care, works in close collaboration with the Public Programs and Exhibitions teams to coordinate and execute the de Young Museum's presentation of Lee Mingwei's Sonic Blossom, Guernica in Sand Performance, and The Mending Project. This position coordinates the planning, organizing, and scheduling of these projects. Serves as liaison with internal and external colleagues, developing collaborative relationships and growing awareness of the artwork. Duties include: planning, organizing, and assisting with the production of and reporting for Sonic Blossom, Guernica in Sand performance, and The Mending project. These art installations are all a part of the exhibition, Lee Mingwei: Rituals of Care, which runs from 2/17/2024 through 7/7/2024. This position is for a 6 month fixed-term from January - July 2024.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides coordination and scheduling services to the Director of Public Programs and Community Engagement and the Manager of Public Programs in relation to the de Young's presentation of Lee Mingwei's Sonic Blossom, an artwork and public activation featuring vocalists and musicians.
- Communicates with museum staff about upcoming activations of Sonic Blossom, reserving rooms (for singer/performer green room, any other necessary spaces) and distributing operations and AV requests in a timely manner.
- Provides on-site support to Sonic Blossom performers and pianist Thursday thru Sunday for activations during the following weekends for a total of 21 activation days:
- February 17 (1 day - opening weekend)
- February 22-25 (4 days)
- March 14-17(4 days)
- April 25-28 (4 days)
- May 16-19 (4 days)
- June 27-30 (4 days)
- Coordinates the de Young's presentation of Lee Mingwei's Guernica in Sand performance on March 23, 2024. Also part of Rituals of Care, this one day performance starts at noon and concludes at sunset. Throughout this day, one person at a time is allowed to walk (ideally barefoot) on the sand-painting, effacing it. At sunset on that day, four performers including the artist sweep the sand, and the project is left in this condition until March 31st, 2024 when this piece will be replaced with another work by Lee Mingwei for the duration of the Rituals of Care exhibition.
- Communicates with artist and performers, and makes all necessary travel and accommodation arrangements.
- Coordinates all logistics on the day, arranging green room, refreshments etc., and communicates closely with Visitor Experience and Facilities to make sure the event runs smoothly and safely.
- Coordinates and oversees volunteers working on the Mending Project. This gallery based installation invites the public to bring an item of clothing to be mended by a volunteer. While the visitor waits a conversation takes place. Some items will be retained and incorporated into the installation.
- Works closely with Visitor Services and volunteers to schedule and maintain the exhibit, making sure that it is staffed and supplied appropriately.
- Assists with compiling Sonic Blossom, Guernica in Sand performance, and Mending Project information for external communications: members guides, brochures, website, electronic signage, etc .
- Works closely with the Marketing + Communications Department to maximize attendance results for all of these projects and events.
- Orders supplies for activations as needed.
- Provides general administrative duties as needed.
- Supports the production of the annual education wrap report.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: BA in art, art history, or related field.
Work Experience: Two years of experience coordinating museum programs for a large arts organization and/or producing public activations and performances.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of art and museums.
- Demonstrated abilities in visual arts programming, specifically performance production.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Researching, public speaking, and computer skills are essential.
- Demonstrated abilities to organize and be resourceful.
