The position is a senior writer in ECU News Services and will serve as a resource in editing and strategic communication decisions with other University Communications staff members across campus. This position will promote coverage of the university’s news through news releases, pitches to media outlets and other communication strategies. Occasional night and weekend work will be required.

Research and write news releases and stories for publication on ECU homepage, ECU News website, East magazine and various social media platforms. This position interprets complex research information and data so it can be translated into a digestible form for the media and general public. Stay current on trends related to higher education public relations.

Edit work of other staff members for accuracy, style and overall excellence. This position routinely edits the material of advanced level employees. General guideline and expectations are provided to the employee in the furtherance of the mission of the office and the university. This position reviews news releases submitted from across campus for accuracy. The employee is expected to rely on their experience, knowledge and judgment. Accuracy is paramount in this position and includes fact-checking, spelling, punctuation and adherence to appropriate style.

Description of job responsibility/duty:
Contacts media representatives on matters pertaining to development of news stories about East Carolina University. The task includes arranging interviews with ECU faculty and administrators and setting up activities for coverage by newspapers and broadcast news organizations. These inquiries usually generate additional calls to the appropriate offices and individuals on campus. This position also contacts assignment editors and reporters to inform them of potential news events on campus. This position contacts news directors or assignment editors at local media outlets to promote ECU as a resource for experts on many subjects. The overall objective for these meetings is to encourage a friendly and working relationship between the university and the news media and to enhance the exposure of the university’s research and educational programs. This position responds to media requests for information and interviews. Will distribute news releases and media advisories; pitch stories; assist reporters and photographers; arrange news conferences or media interviews. Extensive contacts are necessary with faculty, staff, students and senior leaders of the university as well as members of the media, public and staff of the office. It requires preparation of university employees, including leadership, for media interviews. Strong and flexible interpersonal skills are necessary for continued achievement and success in this role.
