Description:

This position is in the Visitor, Volunteer, Intern and Business Engagement (VVIBE) Office, Division of Museum Operations, National Museum of American History (NMAH), Under Secretary for Museums and Culture, Smithsonian Institution (SI). The VVIBE Office supports visitor services amenities, and revenue¬ generating activities, NMAH’s Internship Program and Fellowship opportunities, and ensures streamlined onboarding and training are provided to NMAH interns, fellows, and volunteers.

This position is responsible for all aspects of visitor business-program management at NMAH; managing existing efforts, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing changes, and developing new and unique strategies and partnerships to align business programs with NMAH’s strategic, interpretive, and financial goals.

The incumbent will be required to work at least two (2) weekend days per month, to align with program times and peak visitation, as well as some evenings and holidays.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Serves as as the primary liaison between the Museum and Smithsonian Enterprises (SE) on developing and implementing activities of mutual interest, such as special menus, chef and author visits, store merchandise tied to exhibits, and museum programs, assessing the long term fiscal viability of activities and working to develop sources of unrestricted revenue for NMAH.
  • Consults with the NMAH Finance Director to monitor long term financial planning for business and related programmatic activities.
  • Establishes program objectives and plans and initiates a comprehensive evaluation system for the review and analysis of proposed costs, program development and performance.
  • Facilitates the relationship between NMAH and associated retail business operations in the Museum, such as the Cafes and other business partnerships, ensuring tight fiscal controls are in place and adhered to.
  • Develops, in concert with NMAH Business Partners, a plan of action to ensure alignment between NMAH’s current programmatic offerings and short- and long-range plans that meet the objectives and goals to increase visitor-ship, lengthen visitor stay time, increase capture rate of the stores and cafes, and encourage visitor participation in the full range of experiences, opportunities, and amenities.
  • Researches and develops revenue-generating strategies specifically for groups.
  • Serves as a senior advisor to NMAH’s Assistant/Associate Directors, the Deputy Director, and the Director on issues surrounding managed programs and interactions with internal and external partners, such as Smithsonian Enterprises.
  • Formulates and recommends operating policies, guidelines, and procedures to generate more revenue.
