Photographer And Videographer

Description:

The University of Virginia School of Engineering & Applied Science seeks a creative, can-do, boots-on-the-ground Photographer and Videographer to join its transformed and evolving Communications team. This individual will connect the world with the School’s world-class research and education programs and the people who make up its unique community, telling visually compelling stories of how UVA Engineers make the world a better place.

The Photographer and Videographer will report to the Assistant Director of Communications and will work closely with marketing and communications colleagues including writers, designers, digital and social marketers, and brand builders – partnering with them to create content for audiences including students, faculty, staff, alumni, event attendees, media and higher education peers. The content that the Photographer and Videographer creates will be leveraged across channels including websites, social media, email, printed collateral, signage, media, PR and internal communications.

In addition to creating content, the Photographer and Videographer will also be responsible for assessing the School’s current digital asset management systems and working with Communications team leaders to upgrade, improve and maintain those systems and associated procedures, including metadata and keyword tagging standards and guidelines. Additionally, this role will also work with those throughout the School of Engineering and Applied Science to provide input, tips and training on basic skills such as taking good cell phone photos for social media. Critical to this job will be staying current on creative skills and best practices.

This ideal candidate will be energized by the opportunity to create engaging, STEM-oriented photo and video content that builds UVA Engineering’s brand: shining a light on the people and projects that create societal impact, contributing to broader awareness and understanding of research advances, piquing curiosity among both engineers and non-engineers, and creating emotional connection to the work of the School – as well as the mission, vision, values, community and culture that are at its heart.

This position is located at the University of Virginia and is not a remote role.

The Photographer and Videographer will be responsible for a wide range of marketing and communications tasks and responsibilities, including:

  • Creating photo and video content on location and in a studio setting;
  • Ensuring high-quality lighting and sound for photos, videos and audio;
  • Coordinating production schedules and locations;
  • Processing and editing photo and video content in a timely manner;
  • Cataloging, tagging and archiving photos and videos in the School’s and University’s digital asset management systems;
  • Ensuring accessibility guidelines are adhered to;
  • Creating assets such as photo/video captions, b-roll video, scripts and talking points;
  • Uploading content to the School’s website and social media channels;
  • Managing online platforms and subscriptions for video production and photography such as video hosting platforms (e.g., Vimeo), stock art subscriptions and music subscriptions;
  • Ordering, maintaining and securely storing equipment needed for video production and photography;
  • Adhering to University and School of Engineering brand and visual styles;
  • Collaborating on creative and editorial decision-making;
  • Providing responsive client service to stakeholders throughout the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the University of Virginia;
  • Using, improving and building processes and tools to increase personal and team efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Representing the diversity of UVA Engineering’s community and their lived experiences and perspectives in the photo and video content that is created so that members feel seen, heard and valued.
