The Education Department at the Houston Museum of Natural Science strives to provide an inspirational learning environment, promote scientific inquiry as a mode of thinking, and engage children in the wonders of science. The Education Department’s diverse programs compliment the museum’s exhibitions and films. Many classes and experiences are presented onsite at the museum, while some are designed as offsite Outreach Programs.

The Outreach Program Facilitator presents all of the museum’s Outreach Programs, such as Bugs on Wheels, Wildlife on Wheels, Science on Stage, Discovery Dome, Science Starts and Earth Science on Wheels. The Outreach Program Facilitator will also substitute as a lab instructor for classes at the museum as needed. Although a science background is required, training will be provided on each program and topic.

The Outreach Program Facilitator coordinates with various members of the Education Department to identify likely new customers for grassroots marketing visits in conjunction with travel to and from outreach bookings.

The majority of outreach presentations take place at schools. Occasionally programs take place at community events, such as festivals and conventions, and internal events at the museum. While representing the museum, the Outreach Program Facilitator is expected to promote the museum and answer a wide range of questions from the public.

The Outreach Program Facilitator is one of the most visible faces of the museum in the community and must deliver outstanding customer service and exceptional educational experiences for students and other audience members in a wide range of situations.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interact and work with children of various ages.
  • Deliver outreach programs,
  • Handle live animals, live insects and chemicals safely in and around groups of all ages
  • Develop relationships with customers on site, before and after the presentation, through communication regarding potential outreach improvements and new programs customers might consider booking to improve their educational outcomes.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Fluent in speaking Spanish
  • Stellar educational presentation skills for groups of up to 250
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to quickly learn and communicate new material in a compelling educational format
  • Commitment to providing stellar customer service, for both internal and external customers
  • Enjoys problem-solving
  • Well organized and able to prioritize tasks and time
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Flexible, personable and able to multi-task
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Background in or experience with science

Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to arrive to work on time
  • Must have a proven track record of reliable punctuality and attendance
  • Must be able to work weekends and evening hours, as necessary
  • Must comply with the museum’s COVID-19 protocols
