DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The person in this position will also be responsible for learning Windows Active Directory, Exchange, Account Creation, Office 365, Microsoft Virtual Machines and iSCSI SAN systems in order to provide redundancy to the Windows System Administration team.
- Evaluate network infrastructure, document and make recommendations for next generation technology resulting in a well-documented, robust and redundant network
- Perform network software and hardware upgrades as necessary to keep the campus current
- Provide support for end user connectivity, network access, network security and problem troubleshooting to allow the campus to operate efficiently and effectively
- Administer servers supporting network-specific applications, physical wiring, network switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points as well as the various protocols necessary to support them
- Work with vendors and staff to translate business requirements into technical solutions which allow the infrastructure to meet future needs of systems and users
- Develop and maintain business continuity systems including UPS and bandwidth redundancy which provide a high degree of system up-time and resiliency
- Utilize various tools and troubleshooting techniques such as packet capture, filter, debug and examination on network equipment and placing nodes in a debug state for analysis with vendor assistance or to assist IT staff in troubleshooting applications and/or systems issues
- Provide step-wise solutions to upgrades which minimize major outages and interruptions
- Use network tools to change and archive configurations to ensure prior revisions are available in the event that changes need to be reverted
- Manage projects of medium to high complexity using project management tools
- Continue development of systems which provide electronic feedback from network equipment in order to quickly alert staff of abnormal network conditions (ie: SNMP, Syslog, SMTP Email alerts)
- Provide an appropriate level of notification to the campus community of network events as they occur
- Follow proper change management procedures resulting in thoroughly planned implementations while limiting unplanned outages
- Support end users of the network with day-to-day operations, troubleshooting campus-wide as well as individual problems
- Develop detailed presentations for varied audiences, delivering them clearly and effectively
- Conduct training for staff on new network hardware and help staff work more effectively
- Ensure physical and logical security of the network through appropriate hardware and software configuration
- Perform network management; manage user accounts and security groups, assist with user and system installations as necessary
- Make appropriate recommendations for security enhancements
- Troubleshoot network problems/errors and work with vendors to resolve them, communicate necessary changes/updates and assist in implementation
- Acquire knowledge of and continue to document all aspects of network infrastructure
- Record all changes to the network, user issues and solutions as well as an organized log of events to be used as an aid in future troubleshooting using knowledge base tools
- Monitor network devices to prevent unauthorized network access
- Maintain password escrow procedures and change passwords on a regular basis
- Continually advances skills in technologies relevant to the campus infrastructure
- Prepare requests for budgeting of new initiatives for the next fiscal year which may include the request for proposals, quotes and basic documentation of requirement
- May supervise one or more direct reports as deemed necessary for the success of a particular goal
- Assist with a wide variety of IT projects as required to support the institution
Skills
- 5-7 years applicable network experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- Proven experience supporting and troubleshooting networked computer applications
- Provide clear, concise documentation, providing theory of operation as to why/how a particular configuration is chosen
- Knowledge of Microsoft technologies including Active Directory, Exchange, Office 365 and Hyper-V Server Virtualization
- Ability to troubleshoot network, server and/or application problems with protocol analyzers such as Wire Shark
- Ability to lead meetings and guide teams through an implementation process.
- Experience working in close collaboration with marketing teams as well as within ITS environments.
- Experience with IP Access Control Lists, Firewall Rules, Network Address Translation, Intrusion Detection and Prevention
- Understanding of critical TCP/IP Protocols such as DHCP, DNS, RADIUS, LDAP, SNMP, SMTP
- Understanding of LAN switching VLAN concepts, L2 and L3 Quality of Service mechanisms
- Understand basics of IP routing protocols and L2 spanning trees
- Wireless 802.11b/a/g experience desirable
- Awareness of adhering to best practices with ITS.
- Experience with Enterasys / Extreme Networks LAN and WLAN products, Fortinet Firewalls, Content Filters, and VPN
- Understanding of various LAN cabling types and their correct applications/capabilities
- Must possess a basic knowledge of physical wiring and cable termination and be prepared to complete smaller cabling jobs as required
- Knowledge of Microsoft technologies & applications including Windows, Active Directory, Exchange, Office, Project and Visio
- May serve as a backup to other IT staff as appropriate and where skills are applicable
- Other duties as assigned.
