Description:

The Mountain Heritage Center is a teaching museum located in Hunter Library on the campus of Western Carolina University. Since 1979, the Center has interpreted southern Appalachia’s cultural heritage through exhibitions and educational programs. Today, Mountain Heritage Center staff work closely with faculty to offer WCU students content knowledge as well as professional experience in the museum field and engage with external constituents to the University via workshops, exhibits, and special events.

Primary responsibilities of the position are:

  • Prepares museum correspondence and other communications, including support for the Center’s website and social media platforms.
  • Coordinate employment of student workers and interns, provide basic orientation and supervise student work schedules, time sheet reporting, and selected projects.
  • Track multiple schedules for staff, events, special programs, and overall work flow.
  • Interact with the public, vendors, and outside contractors.
  • Provide introduction to the museum and assist visitors with orientation to the university including interpretation of the MHC’s programs and exhibits.
  • Prepare budgets, contracts, purchasing and work orders, track expenditures from state and non-state funds.
  • Maintain paper records and electronic databases necessary for reports on visitation, programming, student and community engagement, and other information as needed.
  • Comply with MHC, WCU, state and federal policies and regulations regarding records, privacy, and sensitive materials.
