Museum Educator

 

Description:

Under the general supervision of the Learning and Teaching Manager, Museum Educators engage school and adult learner audiences with the museum and its collections and exhibitions. These part-time Museum Educators lead interactive guided tours and play a key role in ensuring that audiences are welcomed, understood, valued, and empowered. Museum Educators collaborate with each other and the Learning and Community Collaboration team, working closely with Gallery Ambassadors and Volunteers to ensure successful visits. They create and facilitate guided experiences for students in grades Pre-K — 12th and adult learning groups, such as ESOL groups from Portland Adult Education, and other constituencies from educational institutions. The ideal candidates will have a passion for working with people of all backgrounds and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs, develops, and conducts guided school tours for grades PK-12, college and university groups, and adult learner groups.
  • Communicates and collaborates with museum staff to understand goals and structure of each group's visit.
  • Greets groups and manages visit logistics, including communication of museum expectations.
  • Gathers relevant data and feedback on visits.
  • Collaborates with other museum guides to share resources and improve offerings and attends continuing training sessions (4 times a year, after introductory training).
  • Maintains reflective practice, and researches best practices in the field, to ensure continuous growth and learning.
  • Maintains touring materials and aids necessary for guided visits.
