Description:

The primary responsibilities of the Museum Director are the management of the Crocker House Museum, including stewardship of its collections, and the management of the business and financial requirements involved with the operation of the museum. In conjunction with the Society’s Board of Directors and its executive committees, the Museum Director undertakes long- and short-range planning, policy development, budget execution and development of the museum’s programs and services. The Museum Director manages the work of an office manager and approximately 40 volunteers who serve as docents and committee members supporting the core work of the organization. The Museum Director expands community outreach by representing the Macomb County Historical Society within the community and participating in events that increase awareness of Mount Clemens’ history and the related role of the Crocker House Museum. The Museum Director maintains focus on activities that will promote donation of relevant artifacts and provide funds to sustain the operation of the museum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Museum Director:

Financial and business records and reports: Performs ongoing financial management as well as long-term planning and reporting. Works with the Board of Directors to develop a yearly budget for the museum. Executes the approved budget and provides monthly financial reports to the Board of Directors. Oversees bookkeeping functions; works with the treasurer and accountant to maintain all financial and business records and conducts a yearly review. Oversees the preparations of the annual audit report, if required, and 990 tax filings with an independent auditor and coordinates reporting by the auditor to the Board. Ensures that all necessary licenses and permits are kept up-to-date and that all Federal, state, and local filings are timely accomplished.

 Planning: Works with the Board of Directors to perform strategic operational planning and create long-term, short-term, and annual goals and objectives for the organization. Provides periodic reports to the Board of Directors on the execution of plans.

Community Outreach: Acts as the chief spokesperson for the museum and represents the museum to the media, staff, and volunteers as well as governmental, professional, civic, funding, and private agencies. Develops an active community presence and relationships to foster opportunities for new initiatives and partnerships that build connections.

Website, Promotion and Publicity: Promotes the Crocker House Museum events and activities in local digital and print media as well as other local resources. Keeps the museum’s website and other social media current.

Events and Fundraising: Sets goals for major fundraising efforts, tracks spending and receipt totals, and reports to the Board of Directors. Works with special event committees to create financial sponsorships and to solicit and process donations. Creates and manages educational programs.

Membership: Works to increase membership numbers and enhance membership satisfaction.

Communication and Education: Supports and promotes the Macomb County Historical Society’s educational mission through the creation of articles for its newsletter and presentation of programs designed to provide historical information to its members and the public.

 Collection and Exhibits: Ensures that items donated to the Macomb County Historical Society are appropriately reviewed, accessioned, conserved, preserved, and cataloged in the museum’s Pastperfect system. Assures that an inventory is maintained that accurately identifies and values all items in the Museum’s collection. Develops and implements permanent and rotating exhibits for the Crocker House Museum and its off-site venues

 Facilities, Supplies and Equipment: Coordinates maintenance and repair, to include cleaning, of the museum’s buildings, grounds, and equipment. Maintains appropriate insurance for the protection of the museum’s facilities, collection, staff, and operations.

Museum Operations and Visitor Services: Regularly meets with the office manager to oversee coordination of museum functions and services. Provides oversight and support, as needed, to the office manager who schedules group tours and coordinates volunteer staffing for regular open hours as well as special tours and events. Maintains records showing utilization of the museum.

Skills and Expertise Required:

Experience with administrative management/leadership of an organization
Ability to serve as an articulate spokesperson for the Macomb County Historical Society and to communicate information orally and in writing
Experience in business development and fundraising, as well as corporate and private donations; demonstrated ability to develop partnerships and identify creative solutions
Financial record-keeping knowledge and skills, to include budget creation and execution
Ability to multi-task and manage day-to-day operations
Ability to prioritize and make clear decisions
Appreciation and understanding for the preservation of historical artifacts and records
Ability to research and report on historical items and information
Familiarity with computer operation and knowledge of the following applications: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, PastPerfect, QuickBooks
Experience utilizing social media, particularly Facebook, Twitter, Constant Contact, Local Hop and Instagram, as well as webpage software
Interpersonal and team interaction skills; ability to work with a diverse community and to work with standing and ad hoc committees
Ability to meet the physical demands of working with and transporting artifacts and materials in an historic building with non-standard stairs
 Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in business management, museum sciences or a related degree preferred and 3-5 years' work in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, demonstrating the ability required for operating a non-profit organization and managing services for a small historical society and museum staffed primarily with volunteers.

 Location: The Museum Director will be based at the Crocker House Museum, Mount Clemens MI. Work location is at the museum, although some duties may be performed from home with approval.
