Museum Coordinator

 

Description:

The Museum Coordinator shall see to the daily and annual operation of the Fort Dalles Museum in coordination with the Fort Dalles Museum Commission and Wasco County. The Museum Coordinator sees to the daily operation of the Museum during the season which includes collecting admission/sales, giving tours, opening and closing the museum etc., they will also recruit and organize volunteers, report and give recommendation to the Museum Commission and conducts work in research, planning, design, and installation of temporary and permanent Museum exhibits.

Essential Functions (in a typical work week):

  • Responsible for the scheduled daily operation and care of the Surgeon’s Quarters, Fort Dalles Gardeners Cottage, Garrison Grounds, Antique Vehicles building and lean-to, Anderson Homestead (house, granary, and barn)
  • Open and securely close the museum, greet patrons, process admissions/sales/donations via a Point of Sales system, answer patron questions, provide tours, and promote “friendships”
  • Responds to emails, phone calls, social media inquiries in a timely and effective manner.
  • Generates content and updates website and social media posts
  • Presents a monthly written Coordinators report. Reports and provides recommendation to the Museum Commission
  • Promotes the Museum, attendance, and Museum “friendships” through radio appearances, development of media content, presentations to local community groups and partner agencies
  • Maintains relationships with tourism related entities such as the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street, and cruise ships and other tourism companies as well as County Commission and City Council
  • Recruits, trains, and manages volunteers for the Museum as docents to assist with daily operations
  • Researches , plans, designs, maintains and installs temporary and permanent Museum exhibits including artifact de/accessioning in coordination and approval of Museum Commission
  • Identifies and coordinates, in partnership with Wasco County facilities and Museum Commission, maintenance projects and contracts
  • Works under the general guidance and support of the Wasco County/City of The Dalles Museum Commission and Wasco County.
  • Researches, follows and adopt professional museum practices

Secondary Functions (in a typical work week):

  • Attend monthly Museum Commission and special commission meetings and other committee meetings such as volunteer meetings.
  • Creation of a biannual newsletter
  • Conduct online research
  • Oversee minor expenditures in alignment with the Museum’s budget

Responsibility/Accountability:

Minimal influence on organization operations, programs, and expense or budgetary outcomes. Dollar amounts influenced would be considered small. Responsibility for the prudent use of assets does not extend beyond own work responsibilities. While public contact is a part of the position’s responsibilities, supervisory action would prevent or correct most issues.
