Military Museum Curator

The Department of Military Affairs is looking to hire a Military Museum Curator located out of Camp Lincoln. This position under direction, performs professional and technical duties in the operation of Illinois State Military Museum: supports all aspects of museum operations to include curatorial care of the collections; collection development; exhibitions; security; research and programs. Performs administrative functions associated with the day-to-day operation of the Museum to include supervision of the museum operations in the absence of the Museum Director, and other duties as required or assigned. The Department of Military Affairs works with the members of the Illinois Air and Army National Guard. We welcome all interested applicants to apply.

Essential Functions

• Researches, plans, develops, and performs the collection duties for acquiring manuscripts, papers, letters, books, maps, photographs, and artifacts which have historical significance to the Illinois National Guard, Militia and State of Illinois.
• Provides curatorial care of artifacts and collections, ensuring appropriate preventative and remedial maintenance.
• Maintains artifact registry, donor files, and loan files associated with prospective and actual donors and lenders.
• Establishes and updated loan agreements with borrowers and lenders of historical property into and out of the Museum.
• Supports the research, planning, development, and implementation of exhibits within Museum.
• Attends professional meetings and training related to curatorial care and exhibit preparation.
• Responds to public inquiries and manages correspondence as it pertains to museum collection and operation.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerate above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with course work in history, humanities and/or public administration.
• Requires training in museum sciences/administration or related fields and/or post-graduate studies or post-graduate degree in related discipline.
