Description:
The Communications and Marketing Manager will seek out and act upon all opportunities to improve the visibility, brand awareness, and overall work of the department to various audiences, including policy makers, prospective and current students, alumni, media outlets, donors, and the public as the go-to trusted source of public health and policy information. This person will serve as the designated media representative and brand ambassador with the Johns Hopkins community and around the world.
This leader will design, implement, and evaluate creative, broad, tactical annual strategic communication and marketing plans and approaches to increase visibility of the department, its programs, and initiatives. This role directs marketing and communication for all constituents, including faculty, staff, and prospective and admitted students. The Communications and Marketing Manager will be the direct manager of the departmental communications team and will have a dotted line for other communication support staff based in centers, providing supervision, mentorship, and professional development.
Main Responsibilities:
Collaborate closely with the department Chair, faculty, leadership team, finance team, academic program directors, and staff to define strategic marketing and communication strategies as defined by the Chair and other leaders in the department.
Coordinate with the Bloomberg School's Office of External Affairs regarding School-level communications and marketing goals, cross-functional projects, external partnerships, media relations, or other collaborations.
Develop an integrated strategic communications and marketing plan and prioritize incoming requests, based on overarching goals and priorities. Provide oversight of the marketing and digital strategy.
Specific Duties:
Develop and implement a comprehensive communication plan for the Department of Health Policy and Management. The plan should include promotion of the educational, research, and practice work of the department across traditional media, social media, digital outlets, and other platforms.
Communicate the vision and brand of the Department of Health Policy and Management by creating new marketing materials (print, digital, video) that supports accomplishments of faculty, research centers, as well as recruitment of new students to the department.
Create and/or coordinate content for the Department, including but not limited to articles, social media posts, videos, event materials, and web pages, to showcase the Department's work and to help recruit prospective students.
Write, design, edit and produce announcements, campaigns, reports, graphics, and other documents that share the Department's work across internal and external platforms.
Maintain and optimize the Department's website in Drupal, including copy and design and updates to faculty and alumni pages and Center content as needed.
Help to organize and promote events in which the Department participates.
Manage the Department's social media accounts and content across agreed upon platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, YouTube).
Create and place paid advertising placements, print and digital, on behalf of the Department.
Create content for Department newsletter(s) as agreed upon, including story selection, writing, editing, design, and project management.
Create and submit internal communications on behalf of the Department.
Contribute to the Department's intranet content on SharePoint as needed.
Draft communications materials for the Department Chair as requested.
Oversee media relations strategy and execution, including pitching to media and coordinating media interviews, in collaboration with the School's Office of External Affairs.
Develop and execute concurrent marketing and communications project timelines, ensuring deliverables and deadlines are met.
Work with consultants and outside vendors on projects as needed.
Represent HPM on University and School communications and marketing committees as necessary, serving as the liaison to promote the department through press releases, articles, media, calendar listings, story ideas for the university and other BSPH channels.
Ensure alignment of all content, messaging, and marketing initiatives throughout the department.
Stay abreast of relevant national and global health policy news, developments and events and keep HPM faculty and staff up to date and proactively engaged as needed
Proactively liaise and correspond with project teams, outside vendors, the Office of External Affairs and other communications colleagues at the Bloomberg School, and other related personnel & partners
Support the development and implementation of internal communications messaging to the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of HPM.
Manage and develop relative staff members, including managing, mentoring, and supporting growth of the department's central communications team, including existing and to be hired communications associate(s) and communications assistant(s).
Lead coordination among communications staff who sit in HPM centers.
Special Skills and Knowledge
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Experience using web content management systems (e.g., Drupal)
Experience using, translating, and applying Google Analytics
Experience with social media platforms and social media reporting and analytics
Experience with design software/programs (i.e., Canvas, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related field
Five years related experience
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
