Description:
Education/Literacy Assistant shall be responsible for data entry of children’s records, COR Advantage input, daily lesson plans, filing, duplicating materials, assisting with the purchasing of materials and equipment, monthly reports, scheduling, maintaining inventory data for classrooms, monthly reports and compiling and distributing the quarterly newsletter for parents.
Requirements
- Develop and implement a Literacy Plan for Bayonne Head Start families to include ESL instruction and GED preparation. Order and maintain the literacy books for ESL and GED
- Establish literacy based collaborations with classroom staff, local libraries, local book stores, and a variety of community professionals and organizations as well as employ technology for children in all classrooms.
- Recruit volunteer parents, city officials, community partners, local libraries, administrators and teachers from local schools to read to the students
- Conduct literacy activities (read) to the students once a month (unless an aforementioned volunteer has been secured)
- Encourage family literacy for the purpose of strengthening children’s positive educational outcomes, and building a thriving community
- Conduct smooth operation of the on-site lending library
- Coordinate Annual Family Literacy activity and assist with other literacy activities
- Research and implement a range of effective and innovative literacy practices
- Attend professional development in-service/trainings/workshops
- Other assigned duties given by Education Manager.
Qualifications
- AA or BA Degree in early childhood education or related field
- Experience working with children a plus
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, adult learners and their families including communication, problem solving, and conflict management
- Proficient in the use of computer software including MS Office and the Internet
- Knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development
- Proficient in the knowledge of how adults learn
- Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend the English language – knowledge of Arabic and Spanish a plus
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently
- Clearance required for background, fingerprinting and sex offenders checks
- Physical and PPD clearance required
