Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops an Extension program in sustainable agriculture to support indigenous and heirloom crop production on Hawai’i Island by providing Extension educational programming to Hawai’i County residents related to the agronomic aspects and cultural significance of these crops.
- Organizes and coordinates the East Hawai’i Master Gardener Program by providing guidance and oversight related to indigenous and heirloom crops.
- Provides Extension programming that identifies current and developing issues, including priority setting and long-range planning through community input, carry out agricultural producer facilitation activities, and implement Extension methodologies.
- Disseminates accurate information to the public and appropriate producer groups.
- Serves as liaison between agricultural producers and government agencies, private companies, and individuals.
- Works with stakeholders and attends meetings that may occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at off-site locations.
- Provides and publish research-based, scholarly information using various means such as social media, newsletters, reports and other communication and media alternatives, workshop and training development materials, presentations, exhibits, and performances that addresses the edible crops industry needs
- Develops resources to support the Extension programming efforts related to Heirloom crops.
- Provides statewide support and guidance related to indigenous and heirloom crop production.
- Provides a quarterly activity report to Hawai’i County Government. Provide annual Civil Rights data and Extension Impact reports to CTAHR Extension.
- Collaborates with the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences (TPSS) leadership and faculty, as well as private and public stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing in agriculture, plant and soil sciences, or related field.
- Ability to apply Extension teaching methods.
- Some knowledge or experience with indigenous crops of Hawai’i.
- Ability to exercise independent judgement and to assume responsibility for developing an Extension program
- Ability to effectively use interpersonal and digital communication strategies to build positive learning relationships.
- Ability to work harmoniously with UH & CTAHR faculty and related agencies in an integrated Extension system
- Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai’i Driver's License (class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.
