Description:
The Office of the VP for Research (VPR) seeks candidates for a Finance Generalist or Senior Finance Generalist position. The VPR Finance Generalist is a self-starter who performs and/or manages a variety of financial activities, with responsibility for delivering high-quality professional-level work with expertise across a composite of finance and related administrative service areas, including budget, accounting, reporting, procurement, human resources, and grants and research administration.
The position is hybrid eligible and provides professional, accurate, thorough, timely, and reliable finance and related administrative support, and works closely and partners with both internal and external VPR stakeholders. This role acts as a key point person and resource for VPR financial operations – including related systems, policies, and procedures. The incumbent is expected to be a resourceful problem-solver, provide sound related expertise and solutions, and help ensure VPR operates optimally in compliance with applicable federal and state laws, and University policies and procedures. In addition, the position works on special projects, as assigned, and may also serve in a supervisory capacity.
This position will be filled at either the Finance Generalist or Senior Finance Generalist level dependent upon the finalist’s qualifications and experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Fulfill tasks of assigned Workday Security Roles for VPR Cost Centers/departments.
Perform monthly account certifications, including maintaining financial and non-financial records following applicable UVA policies and procedures.
Develop and implement accurate, timely, and complete budget and accounting documents, spreadsheets, and templates.
Enter and maintain budgets in Workday/Adaptive Insights. Reconcile budgets to actual results, including monitor inflows/outflows of funds, compile and distribute reports, perform analysis, process transactions, resolve any discrepancies and provide recommendations to ensure that accounts are consistently in good standing. Complete all related University requirements and submittals, adhering to department and institutional standards and timelines.
Prepare and/or oversee the preparation of purchase orders and payment vouchers. Process payments promptly in compliance with the University’s requirements, resolving any discrepancies with vendors, as needed.
May serve as an Expense Ambassador to deliver information, guidance, and training on the University’s expense management system, including answer questions regarding expensing policies and procedures.
Serve as a representative for the VPR in wider institutional finance initiatives. Serve on committees and attend standing meetings.
Communicate frequently and effectively with management, staff, faculty, vendors, departmental contacts, and other stakeholders with professionalism and tact to ensure activities are well-coordinated and well-managed in compliance with University policies and procedures.
May serve as a subject matter expert responsible for gathering facts, analyzing findings, reaching logical conclusions, recommending solutions, and coordinating confidential or highly sensitive projects.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a proficient finance and related operations administrator with a passion to support achieving the UVA research vision.
For the Finance Generalist:
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to finance, business, accounting, or equivalent.
For the Senior Finance Generalist:
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to finance, business, accounting, or equivalent.
Experience: Five years of experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Additional qualifications for both levels:
Demonstrated experience using business intelligence and reporting tools, such as UBI (QlikSense) and Workday reports is a must; possess sound technical skills, including extensive use of MS Office.
Demonstrated experience holding relevant Workday Security Roles is preferred.
Strong attention to detail, analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills are required.
Ability to independently manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment within a complex organization and adapt and excel during times of significant change and transformation.
