Description:
Summary: Under the supervision of the Exhibits Director, the Exhibits Technician performs duties mostly independently. They execute various duties and assignments that require special expertise - a knowledge in construction, maintenance, fabrication, and assembly. This position supports the overall objective to ensure that each visitor to the museum has a dynamic, immersive, safe and fun experience that reflects the mission of Discovery Center Museum.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinates and performs daily maintenance and upkeep on permanent, temporary and traveling exhibitions.
- Performs cosmetic maintenance/upgrade to exhibit components.
- Assists in the estimation of production costs and scheduling of exhibit constructions.
- Maintains a clean and orderly environment in workshop and fabrication materials storage area, monitoring inventory and equipment care.
- Assists in set-up and removal of traveling exhibitions.
- Constructs new exhibit components, casework, displays and scheduling of exhibit construction.
- Keeps accurate maintenance of records and files on new and existing exhibits.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience
Education:
- A professional knowledge normally acquired through completion of high school, specialized or technical training which may be obtained in high school or by a relatively brief period of preparation outside of school.
- Trained in woodworking, cabinetry and basic fabrication methods and materials is required.
- Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electronic components and systems.
Skills:
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of woodworking products and other finish materials including laminates, plexi-glass, veneers, glass and certain metals used in museum-quality exhibits.
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of shop tools and equipment and familiarity with procedures.
- Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical devices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and shop-drawing.
