Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Collaborates with University Collections exhibit team members in the development of exhibit and museum spaces, including the University Collections at McCalla facility and other IU collections-based entities.
- Assists with exhibit construction, demolition, and remodeling.
- Creates or follows designs to fabricate exhibit structures, display cases, furniture, props, mounts, and risers.
- Assists in design and construction of storage units and artifact mounts for the collections care team.
- Constructs appropriate shipping crates and supports transportation of artifacts and other objects.
- Assists in monitoring budgets for carpentry and paint shops.
- Researches and purchases supplies and materials, maintains records.
- Ensures students and non-exhibits staff adhere to policies and procedures for the carpentry and paint shops.
- Assists with collections related campus moves and storage solutions.
- Participates in the planning of exhibits.
- Utilizes design plans to construct exhibit areas in collaboration with the exhibits team.
- Deconstructs or strikes areas as needed, ensuring the appropriate use of both time and materials.
- Constructs display cases, props, risers, artifact mounts, interactives, models, or other exhibit items that provide for the safety of the artifacts and an excellent experience for visitors.
- Assists in lighting exhibit halls within conservation standards.
- Conducts routine maintenance of exhibit galleries as necessary. In the exhibit galleries, this includes touch-up painting, repairing broken or damaged hands-on components, cleaning as necessary, adjusting or repairing lighting, etc. In the shop, this includes keeping all tools and equipment in good working order through regular maintenance, adherence to safety codes and regulations, general cleaning, and maintaining knowledge of changing needs and protocols.
- Assists with collections, gallery, and museum materials moves.
- Completes administrative tasks including email, purchasing, maintaining files of drawings and other specs, and staying abreast of industry standards and new techniques, and other duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities
- Performs duties involving the movement of artwork/artifacts within and outside the museum, including scheduling the packing and unpacking of all artifacts entering and leaving the museum, scheduling and managing the installation of exhibitions, repairing and painting partition walls, arranging display units, and hanging/setting up artwork/artifacts.
- Builds production schedule; allocates fabrication timeline; designs displays, storage, and shipping containers for all artwork/artifacts; and maintains museum best practices regarding conservation and security. Schedules and negotiates with outside vendors any fabrication that cannot be absorbed in-house.
- Performs activities related to the museum installation department, ensuring that all work reflects current industry best practices.
- Builds, manages, and schedules maintenance programs for the departments' equipment needs, including all critical and peripheral equipment.
- Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the museum building through regular inspection, overseeing and scheduling of in-house maintenance and repairs, while identifying appropriate departments for generating work orders, ensuring timely completion.
- Consults on the museum's lighting needs from large to small-scale projects. Specifies lighting hardware needs. Recommends lighting schematics to ensure each gallery's commitment to conservation, while providing exhibition flexibility.
- May assist with museum budget development by relaying cost estimates for crate construction and packing and other materials costs; may make process recommendations to supervisor for improved operational efficiency.
