Growth through Organizational Strategy and Operational Execution
The ED can translate vision into implementable actions and priorities. The Museum’s ED has strong business and management skills and a record of achievement in leading incremental change in exciting and creative ways. The MHM ED is an experienced leader who delegates and prioritizes multiple activities with clarity and confidence. Working with the Board of Directors and MHM Director of
Strategic Initiatives, the Museum’s ED assists in the formulation of the strategic vision and provides input to the Board of Directors on what the futuristic state of the Museum could be. The ED’s responsibilities include executing the Museum’s detailed strategic plan objectives demonstrating proof of consistent and timely progress.
Financial Accountability and Fundraising
The ED develops with the Treasurer an annual budget, secures approval from the board of directors, and oversees execution of operating, capital, and endowment annual budgets. The ED has the primary responsibility for managing and executing the operating budget as well as the funding of same. The ED works manages the Museum’s various financial responsibilities and vendors including daily accounting processes, payroll, accounts payable, cash flow, financial statements, audit. The ED maintains and reviews key financial indicators, both revenue streams and expenses on a regular basis. The MHM ED has a proven track record as a dynamic and accomplished fundraiser as well as generating other sources
of revenue. As the museum depends heavily on financial donations, the ED prepares the annual
Development plan for the Board’s approval and works with Board members and related staff to achieve the development plan’s annual goals. The ED has significant expertise in meeting with potential donors and effectively building the case for financial support, as well as event management.
Marketing and Public Relations
The ED serves as the principal spokesperson for matters pertaining to the MHM, except for matters directly attributable to actions, policy, decisions of, or within the exclusive purview of, the MHM
Officers and Board of Directors (in which case, the President of the board shall be the sole spokesperson for such matters). The Museum ED is to establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations. In a highly professional manner, the ED is to represent the Museum’s programs and value to agencies, organizations, and the public so that it engenders supporters, volunteers, and donors to contribute to the Museum’s success. The ED can attract a range of local, regional, and national audiences. In addition, the ED leverages professional connections in the museum world to attract interesting partnerships and collaborations. The ED is a persuasive, resourceful, charismatic, and energetic professional who generates enthusiasm and inspires others.
Program Development and Administration
The ED also has responsibility for recruitment, employment, release, direction, and supervision of all employees. The ED works closely with Volunteer coordinator to ensure there are sufficiently trained volunteers to meet the MHM operational requirements. The Museum’s ED ensures the maintenance of all official records and documents, and ensures compliance with all requisite federal, state, and local regulations. The ED is conversant in the use of technology and digital media in promoting the Museum, reaching audiences, and overseeing the Museum’s innovative and engaging exhibitions, programs, and activities. Ensuring successful education-based programs and successful event planning are key to the success of the Museum’s Executive Director.
Required Education, Military Service Knowledge, and Non-Profit Experience:
Education:
Baccalaureate degree in museum management or studies, arts administration, business administration or related fields and a minimum of 3 years of successful executive leadership of a non-profit or for-profit organization within the past ten (10) years with clear, quantitative evidence of successful key results.
Military Service Knowledge and Experience:
Honorable discharge from one of U.S. military services (Army, Navy USMC, Air Force or Coast Guard) is preferred and helpful, but not required. Service can be in active, Guard and/or Reserve status. In lieu of honorable military service, civilian service in one of the services is also beneficial. Extensive knowledge of U.S. military organizations and military history is ideal.
