What We Would Like You to Have

  • Advanced degree in a communications-intensive subject area.
  • Recognized (via awards, publications, etc.) by peers for excellence in Advancement communications.
  • Experience developing and executing high-level marketing and communications plans.
  • Experience in leading fundraising and engagement communications, marketing, and creative teams.
  • Experience building, leading, motivating, assessing, and holding accountable high-performing, well-integrated professional teams, preferably in a higher education fundraising environment.
  • Experience working with executive leadership to advance strategic priorities.
  • Experience with marketing and/or donor relationship databases (Salesforce).

    Leadership and Strategy:

  • Leads and implements a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy with measurable and prioritized elements to advance the division’s fundraising, engagement, outreach, and talent management goals.
  • Achieves defined objectives by establishing annual plans and priorities for department.
  • Provides university-level leadership, expertise, counsel and coordination for communication and marketing strategies, as well as leads the team that produces hundreds of deliverables vital to the overall success of Advancement efforts.
  • Analyzes and expands prospective and current constituency groups by identifying needs and creating targeted strategies that enhance and sustain relationships with CU Boulder.
  • Provides vision and strategies for Advancement social media and web communications, including advising and assisting colleagues throughout the division and developing a comprehensive strategy for all Advancement digital communication assets.
  • Through collaborative partnerships with administrative and academic leadership, advances the core products and message of various fundraising and engagement campaigns.
  • Utilizes data, research and technology trends to inform smart segmentations, create feedback loops, evaluate the effectiveness of activities and make tactical adjustments.
  • Actively seeks out and appropriately applies trends and best practices from peer and aspirant institutions.
  • Serves as an active and collaborative partner to all central and unit-based Advancement functions and campus colleagues to foster strategic, effective and collaborative fundraising and engagement practices.
  • Serve as a key member of the Advancement Leadership Team, participating in regular meetings and contributing to the overall direction and management of the Advancement division.
  • Work closely with the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and Leadership Team members to provide strategic direction and input on division priorities, initiatives, and internal and external messaging.
  • Management:

  • Manages, evaluates, coaches and mentors a team of 14 professional marketing, writing and creative staff who provide strategic guidance, hands-on production-level work and in-house liaison/consultant services for Advancement and campus partners.
  • Contracts and manages external vendors such as freelance writers, consultants, photographers, designers, etc., both directly and in partnership with offices across Advancement.
  • Manages department budget in alignment with strategic plan and annual work plans.
  • Establishes operating policies, procedures, departmental and individual goals, and metrics including a review of existing and potential technology tools.
  • Leads with solid approaches to project management, quality assurance and quality control, while also having the skills and abilities to instill calm and a sense of purpose in the team.
  • Balances disciplined planning with agility and handling the unexpected.
