Description:

The Director of the San Mateo Arts Commission will also be a charismatic, visionary, and politically astute leader who will seamlessly and successfully manage the duties and responsibilities in these areas:

Guide the Arts Commission

  • Advise and guide the San Mateo County Arts Commission, County staff, and Board of Supervisors on best practices and current trends in arts management and funding.
  • Prioritize and implement new programs, projects, and policies as adopted and modified by the Commission through their Strategic Plan.
  • Monitor progress and report to the Commission on the Commission’s work plan.

Advocate for the Arts throughout the County

  • Enliven the needs-driven “Strategic Plan for the Arts” in the county.
  • Act as a liaison with art organizations to ensure collaboration and coordination related to cultural and art activities in San Mateo County.
  • Build relationships and collaborations across all County departments and Commissions for the promotion of County goals and amplification of arts and culture.
  • Amplify opportunities to serve and uplift the County’s BIPOC, underserved, and special communities through arts and culture.
  • Build and develop relationships and partnerships, both public and private, for the advancement of arts and culture.
  • Build and support countywide arts and cultural collaborations.
  • Publicly promote arts and culture in San Mateo County.
  • Serve as the liaison to the County Executive’s Office on County Public Arts projects and work closely with County Departments, the Arts Commission, municipalities, and others, to develop Public Art projects throughout the County ensuring adherence to the Board’s Public Art Policy.
  • Manage and energize current arts programs, including the San Mateo County Poet Laureate, Countywide Celebration of the Arts, Youth Cultural Ambassador Program, and Grants Program.
  • Attend professional arts and culture convenings, workshops, and conferences and report back with suggestions and implementation plans for programs and projects that are in alignment with the County’s strategic cultural plan as determined by the County’s Arts Commission.
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with the San Mateo County Office of Education for support and development of art curricula and activities.
  • Identify opportunities for public presentations on behalf of the Arts Commission, and present and/or coordinate with Commissioner presenters to deliver content.
  • Coordinate recognition activities for consideration by the Board of Supervisors, e.g., SamTrans Art Takes a Bus Ride contest and Commission Proclamations.
