Description:

This position is for a Mechanical Engineer in the Aircraft Carrier New Construction Machinery Department supporting the Design, Construction, and Modernization of CVN 78 Class aircraft carriers as well as research and development, specialized technical assessments, and cost reduction initiatives. This position will focus heavily in the area of Advanced Weapons Elevators.

Typical responsibilities will include:

  • Be able to manage projects and lead small Engineering and Design teams (2-3 people)
  • Mentor less experienced Engineers.
  • Performing technical analyses using U.S. Navy specifications and Technical Manuals
  • Performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of system components.
  • Performing ship checks when required.
  • Direct interfacing with customers on product deliverable statuses, when needed.
  • Developing, documenting and briefing interdisciplinary teams on technical specifications, analysis, and calculations for validating system performance
  • Providing waterfront and vendor support for the fabrication and construction of E24 designed products.
  • Technical writing in the form of:
  • Calculation packages
  • Presentations
  • Inspection Reports
  • Technical Manuals
  • Specifications
  • May require a rotation to E24 waterfront Engineering to gain deck plate experience.
  • Interfacing with customers: Navy, Project and Trade Teams, Suppliers



Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
