The Alice Paul Institute seeks an experienced external relations professional to serve as the full-time Director of Advancement. The Director, a key-member of the senior leadership team, is charged with ensuring the delivery of fundraising and communications strategies that guide strategic growth for the organization. The Director works closely with the Executive Director (ED), the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers to achieve significant organizational growth as outlined in API’s strategic plan.

The Director provides leadership and oversight for all the organization’s fundraising and external communication initiatives and will lead revenue growth strategies with a focus on cultivating and stewarding relationships with key stakeholders. The Director will be a frontline fundraiser, leading major and annual gift solicitation including focus on individual giving, corporate partnerships, grant opportunities, and special events. The Director will oversee the Advancement staff, investing in their talent and encouraging their professional growth. The Director will ensure a positive work culture that reflects API’s values of inclusion and equity.

This senior management position requires at least five years of fundraising experience, with a proven record of success in the field.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute detailed plans to meet API’s ambitious revenue goals in partnership with the ED, the Board, and its committees.
  • Lead the identification, cultivation, and stewardship of individual, corporate, and foundation donors and prospects.
  • Lead and implement major gift strategies in tandem with the ED.
  • Provide strategic direction for major gift cultivation and assist the ED and Board in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all major gifts.
  • Lead development and oversight of communications strategies for all external stakeholders to include brand identity, fundraising strategies, special events.
  • Ability to hit organizational metrics as outlined in strategic plan.
  • Represent API in the community at various events and programs.
  • Enhance the organization’s use of online revenue growth techniques, including social media campaigns, and implementation of sales/marketing automation tools for ongoing donor cultivation.
  • Manage the Advancement team currently including a full-time Development Coordinator and other consultants including API’s Grant Writer, PR, and Event Specialists.
  • Oversee the development of the annual fund.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the ED.

 

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, adaptable, and innovative— an entrepreneur type, ready to take the lead, building out new initiatives and processes for the department. The candidate should value API’s mission and working in a woman-centered organization.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • A minimum of five years of fundraising experience
  • Experience with major gifts preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with Salesforce database preferred
  • Familiarity with social media & content marketing and sales/marketing automation preferred
  • Organizational skills and efficiency with follow-up
  • Passion for women’s rights and a commitment to API’s mission
  • Ability to be a team builder, creative thinker, and problem solver
  • Self-motivation with the ability to work independently
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
