Description:

This position serves as the administrator of one of the properties held by History Colorado outside of the History Colorado Center. The Healy House Museum and Dexter Cabin Director, manages the programs, systems and services provided by the museum property and serves as primary liaison between History Colorado and the communities served by the facility.
Duties:

Planning and Operations

  • Works with volunteers and interns. Serves as a key participant in long-term planning for the facility. Assesses community needs and works with History Colorado colleagues to develop and implement programs, systems and services that address those needs, align with mission, and are sustainable.

  • Participates in the planning, development and implementation of exhibitions, educational programs and collections use.

  • Develop annual goals, implementation strategies, budgets and metrics to measure achievement.

  • Administers programs and manages the facility.

  • Assembles, trains and supervises team of paid and unpaid staff.

  • Monitor budgets and progress toward goals. Prepares and submits monthly progress reports and participates in regularly scheduled meetings with History Colorado staff, including fellow community museum property managers.

  • Manages and monitors the museum’s gift shop sales and inventory.

Facilities Management

  • Manages the safe, efficient operation of the facility. Under the leadership of the Division of Facilities, plans capital construction and maintenance projects and ensures all on-site work meets the Secretary of State Standard for Preservation as a National Register or National Landmark property, as well as other federal or state laws relating to historic preservation, water, wildfire mitigation, fuel containment and risk management.

  • Works with the Collections Division to plan use of collections materials for exhibition or educational purposes and oversees stewardship of collections materials on the property.

  • Works with the Divisions of Facilities, Collections and Marketing to develop and implement disaster preparedness plan.

  • Ensures paid and unpaid staff are properly trained.

Community Relations

  • Develops a thorough understanding of the community in which the property resides by participating in community organizations, forging strategic partnerships and developing relationships.

  • Keeps History Colorado leadership apprised of needs, issues and opportunities.

  • Represents History Colorado to the community. Works with History Colorado’s Communications Division to develop marketing and public relations plans. Serves as local media spokesperson on behalf of the organization. Participates in the design and distribution of publications and collateral.

  • Develops public events with History Colorado staff and community partners when appropriate.

  • Works with volunteers and interns.

 

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

 

  • Degree in business, historic preservation, history, and experience in program or facility management, public relation, or related field.
  • Educational background required is critical due to the nature of the building and the artifacts they house.
  • Specialized training as well as the ability to demonstrate best industry practices in the performance of his or her job is necessary.
  • Must have the ability to set goals and prioritize and implement specific tasks to accomplish those goals in a coordinated and synergistic manner according to various plans, procedures, policies, timetables, and budgets.
  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills
  • The position must be inquisitive and interested in expanding their horizons, keeping abreast of professional trends and best practices, thinking creatively, and applying new media and communication tools.
  • Must balance several areas of site operations and supervisory duties, time management, budgets, volunteer availability, logistics, and other factors.
  • Must be able to travel independently.
