Description:
Reporting into the Head, Product and Pricing, Sun Life International, the Director, Reinsurance & Strategic Initiatives is responsible for all external reinsurance activities for our High Net Worth businesses in International HuBS (Bermuda, Singapore and Hong Kong).
Responsibilities:
- Business owner of external reinsurance arrangements. This includes driving and executing reinsurance strategy, developing and maintaining strong working relationships with reinsurance partners, monitoring and evaluating performance of existing treaties, overseeing treaty amendments, and when required, developing recommendations for our reinsurance structure.
- Analyze, research, and provide recommendations on appropriate reinsurance solutions that support the Company’s financial performance and strategic objectives.
- Holistically manage any reinsurance issues to achieve the best outcome for the Company.
- Ensure governance and compliance with internal operating guidelines and industry best practices.
- Serve as liaison to the reinsurance administration, underwriting, pricing, valuation, and finance teams in support of new treaties and amendments.
- Distill complex topics and use appropriate judgment to effectively communicate issues, information, and recommendations to peers, management, and external partners.
- Collaborate across and build relationships with multiple cross-functional areas, such as Actuarial, Finance, Regional Office, Second Line, etc.
- Own the HuBS HNW Reinsurance Committee meetings, including setting the agenda, chairing the meeting, and influencing the discussion on critical issues.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in the life insurance or reinsurance industry, with exposure to pricing/valuation, financial reporting, enterprise risk management, including experience with third-party structured reinsurance. Prior experience in the reinsurance industry is preferred
- FSA or equivalent designation
- Familiarity with Asian (and high net worth) insurance market
- Deep knowledge and understanding of various types of individual life insurance products
- Self-motivated, organized and able to manage multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy while working toward challenging goals and deadlines.
- A strong people manager with demonstrated experience motivating and coaching teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to confidently and clearly communicate complex issues to a variety of audiences while building credibility and trust
- Strong influencing skills to engage and influence senior leadership and partners
- University degree in a related field (Bachelor’s degree or higher in mathematics, business, economics, actuarial science, etc.)
- Willingness to work some non-standard, flexible hours, oftentimes having to liaise with other Sun Life offices and reinsurance partners in other time zones
