Conceives and designs content including centerpieces for section fronts for multiple sites within Gannett for print, digital and/or social products.
Employs journalistic principles to determine importance and fairness when deciding how to play stories.
Responsible for designing content for multiple platforms including (but not limited to) print, digital and social, including sophisticated cover pages with alternative story forms and reflecting the tone of the content and the market.
Responsible for producing or selecting appropriate illustrations when needed for visual storytelling. Follows Unified style guidelines. Utilizes CUE system best-practice workflow.
Collaborates with site editors, planners and staff to maximize use of newshole and resources.
Assigns stories to pages based on site’s booking philosophy, news judgment and page-flow requirements.
Aware of workload of co-workers during shift and offers support to ensure deadlines are met.
Proofreads display type, runs spell-check and tracks jumps as assigned and corrects errors.
Performs other duties as necessary and as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in graphic design and/or journalism required or comparable experience.
Experience with graphics and page design on a daily or college newspaper designing features pages using graphics, photos and photo illustration required.
Good communication skills, solid news judgment and importance of story play on pages a must.
Experience designing under pressure in a deadline-driven environment required.
Experience in digital and social media design experience as well as in graphics, illustrations skills experience and strong writing skills preferred.
Must have the ability to work independently and with people especially under deadline.
Must organize and package numerous elements, resolve production issues and communicate effectively to meet deadlines.

Must be creative and able to think beyond the obvious, packaging visuals and words that engage readers.
Must demonstrate a high level of design and artistic skills and styles.
