Duties

The Biological Science Technician is responsible for performing a broad spectrum of molecular genetic research projects.

In this position, you will be:

  • Collecting, analyzing, and managing data using molecular genetic laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Conducting laboratory-based sample processing, including fungal isolation and culturing using aseptic techniques, routine molecular tasks (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, DNA visualization, sequencing, genotyping), and next generation sequencing library preparation.
  • Supporting scientific, programmatic, and data management, within the Molecular Ecology lab at SERC, as required.
  • Leading the implementation of field and greenhouse studies, including plant species identification and collection, measurement of environmental parameters, seed preparation, experimental set-up and monitoring, and data entry.
  • Assisting in the training of other technicians, interns, and volunteers and manage and organize daily field and laboratory activities at SERC.

Qualifications

GS-09 Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. For this position Specialized experience is defined as experience in completing laboratory and field tasks as they relate to molecular and field ecology, data management, bacterial and/or fungal culturing, and ecological genetics.

OR
Education: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Ecology, Biology, Molecular Biology or Plant Ecology.

OR
A qualifying combination of graduate education and experience as described above.
