The Department of Communication, Media, and Design Arts (CMDA) at Pacific Lutheran University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Design at the Assistant or Associate level. This position supports the Department’s BFA program in Design and our BA program in Studio Art, as well as PLU’s Innovation Studies Program.

We are seeking candidates who have experience in a range of design practices, including both graphic design and interactive design, and who are familiar with industry standard design software. We seek a practicing designer with at least ten years of professional experience, as well as experience in teaching and a record of fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment. Candidates with practice in a supporting Studio Art field such as photography, letterpress/printmaking, digital art, or animation are especially encouraged to apply.

We seek a dynamic and inclusive educator to join our team. Our new Designer will help us reimagine the BFA curriculum and explore new methods in digital production. The Design faculty member will also provide a crucial link between our programs in Studio Art, Strategic Communication, and Film and Media Studies, and will cultivate collaborative opportunities across campus and with the local community.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Instruction and development of Design sequence (I – IV) and additional Design or Digital Media courses.
• Mentorship of Design majors.
• Ongoing professional activity, including professional/artistic production and/or research.
• Participation in departmental operations and support of its culture, including faculty meetings, student advising, and event programming.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and a desire to mentor students from diverse backgrounds and support the curricular goals of the department.
• Interest in innovative course development
• Diverse experience in professional design practice (graphic and interactive design; print and digital application; work with a variety of clients).
• Knowledge of and a commitment to practices that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and in the Design profession.

Required Qualifications:

• For Associate: MFA in Design (Graphic Design, Interactive Design, or related field) and requisite rank and university teaching experience. Terminal degree must be in hand by September 1, 2024.
• For Assistant: MFA in Design (Graphic Design, Interactive Design, or related field) with degree in hand by September 1, 2024, or BFA/BA in Design (Graphic Design, Interactive Design, or related field) and a minimum of 10 years professional practice.
• Facility with current, industry standard software.
