Associate Museum Librarian

 

Description:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILIES & DUTIES:

  • Manages the maintenance, development, and operation of the library ILS (Sierra)

  • Manages and develops the library’s scripting environment using Python, SQL, and APIs.

  • Provides staff training on all upgrades and enhancements.

  • Works closely with vendors providing link resolvers, proxy authentication, authorities processing, cataloging services, digital repositories, and interlibrary loan systems; ensures optimal performance, and resolves technical support issues.

  • Maintains the library’s externally hosted web server and plays a key role in managing library content in the Museum’s CMS.

  • Works collaboratively with Digital Media and IS&T and provides regular updates on library technology and services.

  • Collects and reports system-generated statistics and provides management and statistical reports on systems operations using PowerBI. Advises on the library’s information technology budgets and negotiates and arranges for the purchase of appropriate products and services.

  • Provides research support and scheduled reference service (including 3-4 weekend shifts per year required).

  • Working closely with Museum and library staff, takes a leading role in identifying short and long-term technology needs and opportunities, and explores the innovative use of emerging information and web technologies.

  • Advances Museum and Library commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.


REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Information Science.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, or related experience and knowledge, preferred.

  • Five years managing an ILS required, Innovative Interfaces preferred, in a large research library.

  • Experience working with content management systems required. CONTENTdm, WordPress, TMS, and SiteCore experience a plus.

  • Knowledge of MARC21, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, EAD, RDA and other library metadata standards preferred.

  • Knowledge of HTML/XML, CSS/XSL, JSON, JavaScript, Microsoft Excel, content management systems, visualization tools, web design, and graphic design.

  • Understanding of the MARC record; familiarity with metadata standards and formats such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, EAD, JSON, XML and RDA for library systems required.

  • Demonstrated project management experience, training and supervisory skills required.

  • Experience managing Ubuntu Linux servers including ability to configure and maintain and secure Apache2 web server software. Ability to learn AWS EC2 virtual server environment.

  • Expert level knowledge of Excel and/or Open Refine, and data visualization software, preferably PowerBI.

  • Experience maintaining and developing Python scripts.

  • Ability to learn Sierra API’s to query, update, insert, or delete Sierra data.

  • Experience creating and manipulating library metadata required.

  • Experience developing and administering web-based solutions using CSS, JavaScript, HTML, XML, APIs responsive web design, bootstrap, and related technologies required.

  • Able to maintain and develop SQL queries to view data from the library’s Sierra relational database (PostGres). Familiarity with utilities like pgAdmin, DBeaver, and psycopg2.

  • Experience with scripting and/or programming languages such as Perl or JavaScript preferred.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with a commitment to data-informed decision making required.

  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills and the ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical users.
