Description:

The Associate Director plays a significant role in carrying out the work of the Brown in Washington program with innovation and creativity. This role is responsible for strategic planning and cultivation of the program’s goals to provide students with an enriching and engaging study away experience that is rooted in student learning objectives for experiential learning opportunities. The position holds primary responsibility for day-to-day management of the Brown in Washington program, refining and teaching one or more for-credit Practicum courses, serving as the on-the-ground contact in Washington D.C., and providing mentorship and advising to participating students.

The Associate Director will work with the Senior Associate Dean of the College for Co-Curricular and Experiential Learning to design and implement effective strategies to manage the Brown in Washington program. In conjunction with a dynamic team, the Associate Director has responsibility for the integrity and rigor of the curricular, co-curricular, and experiential learning dimensions of the program; develops outreach and recruitment strategies and manages the application processes; and develops and implements supporting documentation, assessment, and communications functions related to the programs. The Associate Director will work to ensure that barriers to inclusion/inclusive participation for historically underrepresented students and those with high demonstrated financial need are addressed. The Associate Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an alumni engagement strategy, in partnership with Brown’s dedicated alumni in Washington DC, and an Advisory Board for the program. The position may supervise student employees (undergraduate and graduate), as well as the hiring and supervision of occasional consultants. The Associate Director will oversee portfolio-specific budget planning, forecasting, and management and may play a role in fundraising activities. This role will liaise with academic departments, internship host sites, program related partners in Washington D.C., as well as programs and centers at Brown University.

This position will be expected to work in Washington D.C.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree required, terminal degree (e.g. JD or PhD) preferred.
  • Three to five years’ experience as an advisor and/or academic administrator at a college or university or in a public sector context, including experience with program design and implementation; partnership development; development of (co)curricula; and documentation of activities and impacts.
  • Experience in the development and execution of strategy and organizational systems/processes, documentation, and assessment.
  • Experience in student support, advising, writing, interview skills, and assessment related to internship experiences.
  • Proven track record in furthering university diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while supporting students from historically underrepresented and/or minoritized backgrounds is required.
  • Successful experience in academic program administration, including planning and development, implementation, and assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with and mobilize others (staff, faculty, students) to achieve shared results.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, discretion, sound judgment, and leadership skills.
  • Understanding of cultural and institutional dynamics of Washington, D.C, Providence and Rhode Island.
  • The candidate must be able to function effectively independently and under deadlines and be able to manage multiple time-sensitive demands simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
