Assistant Shop Fabricator

Description:

The Assistant Shop Fabricator, Interactive Exhibits works with exhibit designers, content developers, and other departments to develop and fabricate exhibit concepts into interactive exhibit components, including improvements and updates. This role will use shop equipment, hand and power tools, and computer-aided fabrication software and equipment. They will also assist with exhibit mock-ups, design, and fabrication as well as shop organization, clean-up, and tool maintenance. They are responsible for maintaining and keeping all shop software current. This non-exempt (hourly) role reports to the Production Shop Manager.

Responsibilities

• Fabricate wood components, furniture, and cabinetry for museum components using a broad range of both power and standard shop tools.
• Assist in remodeling, repair, and construction within the museum.
• Maintain the function and safe operation of tools, equipment, facilities, and workshop.
• Update software for computer-aided fabrication tools such as 3-D printers, laser printers, and CNC routers.
• As part of the design/build process, interpret drawings and be able to create or modify drawings or designs using CAD and other software.
• Create designs in CAD software used for CNC.

Requirements and Skills

• Experience in wood carpentry and metal fabrication; welding (aluminum and steel) a plus.
• Ability to read blueprints and construction diagrams and transform designs into products using these tools.
• Proven experience in the use of a broad range of power tools, shop equipment, and other heavy work tools including vertical mill, lathe, and cold saw.
• Proven experience with use of elliptical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment.
• Excellent knowledge of safe shop procedures and equipment use.
• Knowledge of CAD and CAM software to generate true 3D objects for CAM or 3D printing.
