The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing the daily pipeline of students seeking funding from the Office of Financial Aid. This position plays a critical role in institutional recruitment, retention and revenue goals and is responsible for ensuring the Financial Aid component of those elements is delivered at an exceptional service level.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.)

Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of Financial Aid the Assistant Director of Financial Aid is accountable for allocating and implementing various technology and personnel resources to ensure the Office delivers high quality customer support within the confines of a regulatory environment. The Assistant Director is expected to provide guidance and direction to the associates and senior associates within the Office but does not have any direct reports by effective performance in these essential areas:

  • Leads the effort in managing the daily pipeline of students requesting financial aid.
  • Analyzes front end student service issues and resolves.
  • Assists in the packaging of financial aid when needed.
  • Helps manage external vendors (verification, call center, etc.).
  • Explores and investigates new technology for the department to leverage and enhance services offered by the Department.
  • Assesses volume to help prioritize the needs of students requesting aid against the resources and requirements of the College.
  • Assists with the establishment of annual Financial Aid budgets, awarding priorities and award cycles being mindful of matriculation and student retention goals.
  • Ensures quality customer service and timely delivery of aid to a diverse constituency.
  • Maintains a positive, customer service-oriented office atmosphere while providing administrative support and oversight of daily operations.
  • Develops easy to consume literature regarding federal, state and institutional financial aid including development of web-based and print student information.
  • Assists the department with the development and maintenance of the financial aid policy and procedures manual.
  • Works with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to develop reports for compliance, tracking, analysis, and quality assurance.
  • Maintains current knowledge of professional issues.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institute of higher education or a combination of education, training, and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of comprehensive financial aid experience including the possession of understanding compliance materials associated with the awarding and disbursement of financial aid
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently; the ability to work independently; and be able to demonstrate a command of and utilization of technology to further manage the objectives of the team
  • Successful history of teaming with stakeholders and/or constituents outside of their reporting channel to further the mission of their employer
