Description:
TAM seeks a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure-track Instructor/Assistant Curator (60% instruction/40% curator). This individual works collaboratively with the Director and Curator of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum (TCM) to collect, preserve, interpret, and present the museum’s holdings in various ways.
60% - Instructor
- Teach undergraduate courses that may include but are not limited to fashion trend forecasting, fashion and society, history of fashion, history of textiles, Queer fashion, textile science (lecture and/or labs), and apparel quality.
- Engage students in varied and creative ways with collection.
- Present course concepts in an innovative, engaging, and inclusive manner encompassing group work, critical thinking, writing, and industry-based case studies or projects.
- May supervise undergraduate or graduate students' independent studies and/or honors students interested in fashion/dress/textile history or museum work.
40% - Assistant Curator
- Work collaboratively with the Director and Curator of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum (TCM) to collect, preserve, interpret, and present the museum’s holdings in various ways.
- Cultivate donor relations, respond to loan requests and research inquiries, sit on committees that create and maintain policies and procedures, create or contribute work to a rotating schedule of exhibitions (at least two exhibitions per calendar year),conduct regular conservation assessments and measures, and maintain accurate and detailed accession records to document and make available to researchers, faculty, and students the breadth and depth of our holdings.
- Support the research efforts of students and faculty interested in using material culture as primary source material and help faculty with object-based pedagogy.
- Nurture and develop our long-standing relationship with our community support group, the Friends of the LSU Textile and Costume Museum, and will work with TAM support staff to coordinate events, including annual meetings, fundraisers, and exhibition openings. Work with TAM support staff and the LSU Foundation to accurately track and recognize monetary donations. Work with various campus, community, and professional partners to enact the mission of TCM and mentor and manage graduate and undergraduate student-workers.
- Support the Curator’s efforts related to research, publication, and grantsmanship as part of the mission to elevate the prominence of TCM as we disseminate knowledge and seek external funding.
Minimum Qualifications:
Masters Degree in Dress History, Museum Studies or related area
Specific Experience: Foundational knowledge of Textiles, Apparel Design, and Merchandising as demonstrated by completed coursework in the discipline and/or other professional work experience. Experience with fashion/textile collection management and exhibition.
