Examples of Duties
- Plans and coordinates monthly schedules of rehearsals and performances for the band in collaboration with the Band Director.
- Conducts and/or participates in full band rehearsals, sectionals, or small group rehearsals; supervises the positions and activities of a section.
- Conducts or leads the woodwind or brass and percussion sections in rehearsals as section leader; supervises and instructs musicians in the section; makes suggestions as to technique and explains musical interpretations.
- Supervises and leads the band in parades as drum major; conducts all marching rehearsals; recommends musical selections for use in parades.
- Plays first chair level, including regularly playing solo passages and performing as featured soloist.
- Participates in concerts, parades, and other regular and special engagements of the band; warms up, warms down, tunes up, sets up, and breaks down all equipment; studies musical scores and memorizes parts.
- Participates in Band Advisory Committee; identifies musical problems and resolves them; reviews and resolves section concerns including the assignment of parts and performance techniques.
- Assists in all personnel and fiscal matters, including staffing, inventory, and equipment needs; reviews and approves expenditures; maintains records and prepares reports.
- Participates in the interview, auditioning, selection, and promotion process; moderates interview process; recommends candidates for open positions.
- Assigns, trains, and evaluates employees; reviews the employees' performance and prepares job performance reports; conducts investigations and makes recommendations regarding personnel actions, including disciplinary actions.
- Prepares and reviews all timesheets and attachments for accuracy and conformance with contracts, rules, and procedures.
- Transports band instruments and equipment to and from performances; sets up and cleans up at performances; cares for and maintains instruments and equipment.
- Assists in the maintenance of the band's music library and property control system; participates in indexing, cataloging, and filing band music and other matters; replace and mends torn and worn music sheets.
- In the absence of the Band Director, may assume responsibility of the band.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:
- graduation from high school, and
- applicants shall have experience playing in a concert band or orchestra or in a musical group over a six year period, in which
- three (3) years shall have included experience as a conductor or an assistant conductor, and
- possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license, provided, this license requirement may be waived for qualified individuals with disabilities who are able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
