This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) MU Gallery & Art Collection Assistant Curator position for the Memorial Union at Oregon State University (OSU).

This is a special position that doesn’t come up often, maybe every 2 years or so. The Memorial Union Concourse Gallery & Collection is seeking a student employee to assist in the planning, representation, installation & other duties associated with gallery operations. Also included, and the bulk of the position’s time, is caring for a permanent art collection and its use in the Memorial Union and the SEC.

This is a learning position, you do not need to have experience in these areas to be qualified. It’s a niche, and very few students will have had access to learn these skills. The students that have the most successful employment are able to be careful with art and materials, great at being able to keep regular communication with team partners, are interested and want to learn, and most importantly to be able to be self-directed without a set schedule. Basic knowledge of different types of arts and materials are helpful.

The Concourse Gallery is located in the beautiful & historic Memorial Union. The focus is on exposing students to a variety of art. The collection is the art on display in shared spaces and many offices within the MU and the SEC.

Position Duties

Duties included in Working with the Collection:

• Managing MU permanent art collection & maintaining the collection database
• Inventory and condition reporting of art collection
• Working with clients, comprised of OSU staff/faculty/and students with offices in the SEC and the MU for art loan.
• Carefully install & secure art in offices or public spaces as needed/ remove art from same.
• Framing work and frame repairs when needed
• Art restoration work, again, this is a learning experience and you will be taught as we go.
• Represent the Memorial Union and its collection with other museums, curators, art professionals, etc.

Duties include assisting the Art Curator:

• Art selection committee member and lead – assists with the selection of art & set exhibition schedule, takes a leadership role in working with student committees on art selection process and exhibit hanging.
• Communication with artists & graphic designers to secure information for supporting gallery materials as they relate to exhibits.
• Careful handling of art & art installation
• Occasional art transport using motor pool vehicle.
