Under the direct supervision of the Director of Information & Delivery Service (DIDS), the Access Services Librarian (ASL) coordinates and participates in the routine operations of the Dahlgren Memorial Library (DML) Information Services Desk in the evening hours. This position provides direct supervision for students, part-time employees, and other Library staff who serve on rotation assisting patrons with computer, Internet, database, and Library Information System problems during the evening shift Monday through Friday. These problems can range from difficulty in signing on to a database, hardware problems, a patron’s lack of familiarity with a computer program, or how/where to access information on a wide range of medical topics. Overseeing Library operations and acting as the senior representative of the Library during evening hours, additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate and participate in the daily and evening Library operations.

  • Supervise student assistants, actively working with the Director of Information and Delivery Services in the development, training, and assessment of all Information Services Desk, including students and Library staff who work the desk on rotating schedules.

  • Participate in Access Services department management, contributing to the development and planning efforts, motivating and leading by example, and being familiar with training and instructional goals, objectives and learning styles.

  • Work closely with the Director of Information and Delivery Services to develop task lists and effectively utilize personnel, ensuring that the Library is properly closed and turned over to the contract security management staff following established policies and procedures.

  • Provide instruction for Dahlgren’s print and electronic resources and assist patrons with their printing, hardware and software problems, photocopying, and other technology questions.

  • Create UIS/technological problem tickets, following up with tickets to ensure the technological issue is repaired and making recommendations regarding technological equipment at DML.

  • Manage and perform circulation services such as check-in and check-out of materials, shelving Library materials, bringing photocopying paper to the Information Services Desk, answering circulation e-mails, and phone inquiries.

  • Manage follow up with regard to overdue materials, high value /long-standing fines, and fine dispute resolution, creating reports and sending fees and fines to the student accounts department.

  • Actively participate on teams, committees, and collaborative projects both internal to the library and within the Medical Center/University as requested.

  • Occasionally assist the Senior ILL Services Specialist with document delivery services and assumes responsibility for service when needed.

  • Monitor and ensure that payments for non-resource purchases are completed in a timely fashion and assigned to the correct budget line.

  • Provide backup if needed to the Senior Resources & Acquisitions Specialist for GMS requisitions, purchase orders, and invoices when they are out of the office.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Master’s Library Degree

  • One year of relevant library experience, preferably in the area of public / customer service

  • Familiarity with library information resources and systems, computer hardware and software, and office equipment

  • Familiarity with the Internet, e-mail, and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access

  • Ability to resolve hardware and software problems as well as issues related to copiers, printers, and other equipment

  • Strong organizational skills and good attention to detail with the ability to teach staff and students

  • Ability to work under pressure in a complex, changing environment and to communicate effectively and work well with members of a diverse academic medical center community

  • Must be capable of making sound decisions based on established policies and procedures and enforcing those policies fairly and consistently

  • Knowledge and maturity to make decisions that directly affect patron access to important research and medical information
